There are 100s of bands as 'good' as Oasis

Oasis are much more of a cultural phenmoneon as opposed to an out right musically important entity. They connected with an entire generation. Working class lads making music to make money to get by. Angry at the world. There are bands that are better at doing that, but Oasis came around at the right time. They're radio friendly enough for that.

I think Oasis are a very inspirational band. They done what Nirvana did and made thousands of kids pick up the guitar and form bands. Which I suppose is good. It's just a shame they are entirely musically redundent. They're the band that people want to be like, but that no one wants to sound like.

I still hate them though. Bland music for a bland generation. It's funny to think that after they got rich and had reasons to stop writing songs about life on the dole, or being angry at the world, that they managed to become a cliche of themselves.

You just can't argue with metal fans about Oasis. It's like saying that an apple is better than a peanut. It makes no sense.

I don't often agree with you on matters of music but you're 100% spot-on here; nobody else is as good as Oasis at making trite crap...And churning out more and more of the same crap for years and years...

lol - the first 2 albums were good... but yeah all the same!

I despise that comment because I've devoted the last 36 years to metal (since I first heard Zeppelin) and I think Oasis were superb (1st 2 albums) and still give an excellent rock concert.
Of course everything they've ever wrote has been a rehash of The Beatles or The Who but thats another matter.

I always though of Oasis as yet another Beatles cover band that had no skill or craftsmanship to actually do proper covers and made exemplary point of it. The "new version of old" comes and goes in British music, you hear the same Smiths, same Joy Division, same Buzzcocks, different frontmen, different arrengements, but generally same old, same old. I have no doubt there were and are many bands like Oasis that never make it, partially because it's easier to make it as Cheeky Girls than as a good rock band these days and no one really cares if you're good. It's just how it is, you can be the new The Doors and unless you know how to break through the metal doors of the "5 minute, one single star" industry the contract will never ever materialize and the best you can hope for is career in flogging guitars on Denmark Street. Oasis is basicaly prime example of the "one off copies" - you have one one band on the market that sounds like something successful from the past - one set of "Editors" for Joy Division listeners, one Wolfmother for your Zeppelin memory lane, one Killers for the village wedding crashing Springsteen types, one Scisors Sisters for the Bee Gees fans on cruise ships etc. etc. Oasis is basically the same model - second hand sound, pastiche with mixed quality of delivery.

That's cos it is music against noise. I've never got far with metal fans because I'm a fan of music.

Nice to see your reasonable discussion has descended into an inflammatory remark that serves no purpose other than to attempt to get a reaction.

Well it worked, here it is:

I like metal. I like rock. I like some punk. I don't particularly like dance music, funk, classical, Jazz or even that extreme grindcore metal stuff that Penski listens to. But i'm not narrow minded enough to label it as not being music purely because I don't like it or even "get" it.

If the definition of "music" is limited to simple chord progressions and uncomplicated guitar solo's, then that would be very boring and undiverse.

Its almost as if because a fair few people have disagreed with you in this thread, you've chosen to derail it opposed to further debating your point :(

Cheeky bugger.

I'm listening to Eva Cassidy atm.

PS: 'Stabbed' by Matter is THE BEST SONG I HAVE LISTENED TO THIS YEAR.

Their stuff may not be as popular as the Morning Glory/Definitely Maybe days but they certainly have talent and you can go back and listen to their albums and they still sound good now.

All these other bands - Razorlite, Keiser Chiefs, etc are what I call 'generic bands' meaning they all sound similar and only survive a few listens.

You misunderstand. It's impossible to compare two completely diffrent genres. There are bands who are considered to be equally as influential in both genres of music. I'm not taking anything away from achievements here. I'm just saying it's pointless to compare it sonically. You would be looking for diffrent things from diffrent styles of music.

How can you not like Oasis?

They own. Only one of the good bands left today, everything else is .. well crap.

A great majority of bands music all sounds similar. Foo Fighter, U2, ALL pathetic shouty metal bands, KaiserChiefs, Kasabian, the list is endless.

Too many Emo kids.
Put quite simply; if you think this, you're not looking hard enough.

I like listening to some of their older stuff, but in all honesty you really can't expect all that much from the type of music they play since it's usually the case of either you enjoy it or you don't, there's very little to appreciate from a technical standpoint.

Not exactly the same, but I like the Verve much better; they're one of my favourite bands in that genre.

Looking hard enough at what?

Pick the last 10 Foo Fighters songs, they all sound the same.
Pick the last few Kasabian songs, very similar.
Majority of metal bands is just thrashy guitars and shouting and sounds very similar.
Genres of dance music all sound similar.
Jazz artists can sound similar from one song to the next.

The majority of bands/artists have a sound, which makes a lot of records sound similiar in certain ways.

And people saying I have no knowledge of music, huh the hell are you talking about :)
