** The Official ATI 3870/3850 512/256mb Review/Overclocking Thread **

haha i know :P cpu limited most of the time tho.

any other wow players got a 38x0 card and found enabling AA makes everything blurry/fuzzy (ui/text/textures) as well as AA'ing the edges?

If you get the modded bios you can go higher than that as well Amonlym :) It fixes the PLL divider issue with the original bios :)

Unfortunately still not stable though under that bios, it has the same lock up problems when you try running 3D Mark 06 which sucks!

Got the "Thermalright HR-03-GT VGA Cooler" for X-mas and I can say temperature is pretty good without any FAN on the heatsink. I'm getting 33C Idle / 55C load on Call of Duty 4.

My old temps were 35C idle / 55-65C load with the standard fan @ around 30-50% spin.

I'm sure you can overclock pretty good with these heatsink + fan.

Everything is silent and the PC performs decently with the latest games, what more can you ask.

What impact has this had on the rest of your temps (core and case)?

Does changing the AA filters within CCC make any difference to the image quality?

My card seems to be stable at 865/1276 with the stock cooler at 70% (noisy, I know) and it has allowed me to easily crack 10k 3dmark06 points. I have the 8th fastest single 3870 score on AMD CPUs :D. My wee Brisbane holds me back a bit to all those running 6000+ chips.

Here's the compare URL:

With a S1 on the way, I will reduce noise levels considerably and hopefully hit near 900Mhz on the core. My card is running a BIOS that puts the stock clocks to 830/1200Mhz.

nice score...

i wish whatever fubar'ed my SM2 would go away :P. 1.4v is still fairly low, you cant get more with a higher v-core?

As far as I'm aware ATI Tool doesn't currently support the voltage options for the 38xx cards, but will in the future.

I do only have an Asrock 4CoreDual board with a 4x PCI-E slot so my problems may stem from that. I wondered if there are any regular issues I need to deal with before attempting anything more drastic with my 3870.

Oh, and Gurusan, I'm not as mental as you if you think i'm gonna stick something like 1.8 on air through my card with a pencil mod lol ;) (I'd much prefer a hard wired method rather than 'iffy' pencil).

Matthew

pencil mod aint iffy ...girl :)

as long as you use you're MM and get the right lead amount/resistance to start with the resistor isn't suddenly going to attract more lead from fresh air is it ;)

But it will loose resistance over time (i.e. the lead falling of as such).

Anyway, onto the more important issue here... me a girl? lol Handbags at dawn baby!! kiss kiss ;)

Haven't got a multimeter so will have to hold fire on any mod at the moment anyway. I'm not getting the best from my current rig as limited by the poor overclock on the Asrock board, so I'll get better results by changing the board then pencil/wire modding.

Yeah, those SM2 scores are really weird. If they were scoring like the rest of your scores then I am sure you would see over 10200 points.

Regarding my CPU, it is a 65nm Brisbane and 1.4V is just over 10% greater than the default of 1.25V. I only just raised the voltage from 1.35v and if 3ghz is stable, which I am testing by running OCCT's CPU stress test whilst at work, then the rise in voltage will have netted me an extra 200Mhz.

I am still very much tweaking my setup and am curious to see how far I can go with silent air cooling, whilst keeping the max CPU temp under 50 degrees. Should be fun :)

Hi Guys,

I've got my Sapphire HD3870 with the bios flashed to the updated sapphire released bios. Since I haved flashed it I am unable to overclock the card at all. Riva Tuner fails to apply the clocks, and the sliders switch back to defaults. ATI Tool just locks up and never loads.

What are you guys using to overclock these cards? Would be disappointing if I had to flash back to the old bios just to get some overclocks.

I'm on XP64

you put tape over it, well that's how i've always done my pencil mods and they stay good.

<waves handbag around like a madman> :p

Well ive just bought 2x power color hd 3870 xt's i get 11000 on 3d mark 06 with one card and just over 13000 with 2..now the problem is they will not overclock at all and they wont really play any game in crossfire crysis forget it! and with cod4 the sound goes all funny and the graphics go all choppy even though im getting 70 fps...ive tried all sorts im just hoping its down to drivers...we will see.
