Restaurant recommendations required - Leeds/Yorkshire area

Over the next month or so I'm going to be taking my new girlfriend out for a couple of meals, one to a steakhouse and the other to a seafood place. The problem is that, whilst I'm up on my Italians, Chinese and Indian restaurants, I rarely go out for steak or seafood and as such aren't aware of any particularly good ones. Therefore I'd like some recommendations of both within both the Leeds and the York areas if possible.

I'm not after the most cripplingly expensive places, but equally I don't want crappy, mediocre food and service. Somewhere that does really good food in a nice environment on a budget of, say, roughly £30-£35 per person? Also, when I say Leeds & York, I don't necessarily mean the city centres. I'm happy to travel to the surrounding areas.

Cheers :)

The best steak I've had round here was at the Kaye Arms which isn't far from the YCM. For simple fare the Hare & Hounds a bit further on is a good all-rounder for pub grub. In a similar style to the RedKite out Durkar way.

Bibi's does a good steak too.

Livebait is probably your clear option for Seafood in Leeds. Since Fish! closed you have that or you have Wetherby Whaler/Mermaid/Tingley Bar. None of which are particularly up-market.

I think getting your end away would qualify above ignoring a veggies wishes early on in a relationship!

How about

Thai Edge Leeds City Centre (Near 'The Light')

or

Japanic Leeds

Not exactly what you're looking for but there is my 2 pence.

There's the Loch Fyne restaurant opposite the Queens Hotel for Seafood, quite nice food, about £15-20 for your main course. There's also Viva Cuba if you like a bit of a change for something like Tapas (Far better than La Tasca junk!)

I would't like to say really, as i have only ever been drunk ;) when i've eaten in Mex before :) The food in Viva Cuba was nice, portions were larger than La Tasca, and everything wasn't swimming in oil/garlic/chillis. there were some nice authentic Cuban recipes (checked them out with someone i know in the states whose familly is from Cuba, she liked the sound of them and they were all pretty much spot on ingredient wise to what she used) also.

Thanks for the suggestions so far, much appreciated. Some really good ones for Leeds, it's going to be hard choosing between them all! Not as many for York yet though, does anyone have any more recommendations of restaurants there?

Try and impress your girlfriend eating their 78oz steak ;)

Great idea! Well, right up until the point where I can't impress her later on due to being too full to move :p

Yeah, I'm thinking more actual seafood restaurant than chippy ;)

Depends how inconsiderate Trojan is.

Good grief man, give me some credit!

Succinctly put :)

we went to browns who do a lot of fish options. came to roughly £50 for two of us.

Been there a few times, would not really call it a place to eat on a night out, more of a nice place to eat during/after shopping on a saturday/sunday.

Seconding Loch Fyne if you're after fish in Leeds. It's excellent.

There's so many great places to eat in Leeds though, Chino Latino is pretty good (if a bit pricey) and Wasabi Teppan-Yaki is a really good fun japanese place where you get the food cooked at your table with the chefs showing off a bit.

Apparently Shogun Teppanyaki is better, though I wouldn't be able to say myself as I'm not a big fan of that style of food.
