AAA Games for 2008

devil may cry 4
burnout paradise
metal gear solid 4
gran turismo 5
gta4
soul calibur 4
tekken 6? (2008 i think)
street fighter 4
final fantasy 13

No one think Little Big Planet might be AAA? After watching tonnes of videos I think it could be.

I can't wait for it.

I'm afraid I fall into that category that's completely baffled by all the fuss. A cutesy traditional platformer, with coop and high customisability... err yeah? yawn.

My big hitters are:

Alan Wake
Project Offset
Fable 2
GTA IV
Borderlands
Splinter Cell: Conviction could be a surprise massive hit as it shares a lot of the Assassin's Creed tech.
Fallout 3 (could be my goty)
Banjo just could be great too
Left 4 Dead

I also think there's a huge chance we'll see Mass Effect 2 and Gears of War 2 this fall.

I do think MGS and Resistance 2 will be excellent (even if MGS doesn't really appeal) . I think Killzone 2 will look great but be short and a little generic and I think ninja gaiden 2 and Lost Odyssey will disappoint. GT/FF XIII will fall into next year.

The two I'm looking forward to more than any others are GTAIV and GT5.

Littlebigplanet is following up close behind though ;)

That is great news! I hope they don't rush the release

I don't think they will, sounds like it's been in development for ages and there's still no rock solid release date. Nor have I seen much press release stuff (only the one trailer that was released on LIVE) that said I haven't looked for it incase I ruin it

What does AAA mean anyway

Hard to define really.... They have to be big sellers (at least 1 million) copies. They generally recieve very favourable reviews. Finally they should be in some way responsible for an increase in the number of people who buy the console that they are released on.

The last point is becoming less of a criteria as less games are exclusives these days.... However I think Halo 3 achieved this on the 360 and I think Metal Gear/Gran Turismo will on the PS3

An arbitrary made up term, that has no technical/universal definition, so people who are fan boys of certain games throw the title around. The laughable thing is that some games in this thread have no screenshots or in game videos etc released. So really thread title could just as easily be "Hyped games for 2008".

A good example (for me) is Alan Wake. NO-ONE here has seen any in game content AT ALL. It is a new IP so there is no "history" for this (like there may be for sequels established IPs). But people say I am looking forward to this, like they know details about the game. Bizarre.

As far as I know, all that is known is that the game uses very detailed physics/AI multicore CPU technology, has huge draw distances and the setting can change between day and night. The game is described as atmospheric/moody/dark horror or words to that effect.

I know the same people who made Max Payne involved made it, but it is silly to assume that any one developer cannot make a stinker of a game every now and then. So for me this is not a AAA title, but more a overhyped title with no real substance available in the public domain, at present, and no release date. It would not surprise me if we see a demo or new video shown that has not moved on much from last year. (I am always warty of games where you see too much tech demos and or snippets of development every 6 months to 1 yr etc). In real terms this tells me nothing about the game. The tech demo was flashy but thats what its supposed to be!!!

Where can I find a definitive list of these AAA games?

An AAA game for me is a must have, or must play system selling game (even if it aint actually that good, think Halo 3), Alan Wake has a bit of a cult following, who is to say it won't be a AAA game, just reading about it the screens and knowing who is behind it suggests it will be a AAA game, well to me anyway, but I tend to be positive about games until they let me down, so all the signs to me suggest AAA game that will be a massive success for the 360 (maybe that is why some want to dismiss it as a tech demo I don't know) But these same people normally promote buying a PS3 on the back of games that might appear this year, with no basis to assume they are going to be good, so it's a bit funny :)

You can't, but then I think you already know that. It's no different from using the term blockbuster when talking about movies; it's obviously subjective to some degree.... Not necessarily a good reason for not using the term however.

I only say tech demo as the game devs themselves have only defined the released footage as a technology demo/preview themselves (from memory). If you have links to any videos or screenshots or gameplay that aren't taken from the tech demo then by all means point me in the right direction.

The thing that genuinely baffles me, is how can it have a cult following? there is no substance, as yet. I don't know if Remedy have made anything apart from Max Payne (I played both MPs).

Based on that logic, any company that makes 1 good game, we should assume their future games will be good and give them cult status?

Not arguing, just pondering on what it is that is exciting about a game no-one has every seen that is a new IP. If it was someone getting excited about say Grand Theft Auto 11 I could understand etc.

Me being sarccy and forgetting a smiley :)
I think it's got something to do with the w3c. ;)
LOL!!

I agree about Alan Wake. It very well could be an absolute gem of a game, on the other hand it could be a big disappointment ala Assassin's Creed (imo).

I think people get excited about upcoming games because they want to believe they will be really good. Most people on these forums must be games enthusiasts else they wouldn't be here (or they are just bored at work :))... It's makes it more enjoyable to read previews etc. if you buy in to the hype rather than just thinking it's going to be another let down.

The same is true of lots of things in life. In football, if your team signs a £10M foreigner who you've never seen play are you going to be excited about it or are you going to think... He's probably a load of rubbish?

I'm just as guilty as anyone... Did I go to Las Vegas in December thinking Ricky Hatton was going to smash in Floyd Mayweather's face? Of course I did! Nothing wrong with a bit of blind faith every now and again :)

Sorry if this has gone a bit OT.
