Love it when Microsoft try to put positive spin on bad news. They might have a larger share of the total consumer spending, but this could be equally explained away by the fact that the 360 was for much of the year £100 more expensive than the Wii. Plus they've totally ripped their customers off with the HD-DVD drive that will soon be obsolete and need replacing with the BluRay version ;)

My, my, you are touchy today aren't you :)

Erm..

Nonsense?

Something like this article would have been more worthy of a discussion.

yep, esp this bit

PS3 managed to sell pretty much the exact same amount of units in its first year as the 360 did – whilst dealing with some of the most negative press in gaming history,

people seem to forget this, not bad for a console that had nothing much going for it in its 1st year

I love the sony fangirls excuses in threads like these. The 360 is still dominating the PS3 :)

In North America but what about world wide figures, you cant just look at a set of figures for one area of the world (North America) and say the 360 selling better than the PS3.
If you look at the whole picture you will see that only in North America is the 360 selling better than the PS3 and in reality the PS3 is doing better with world wide sales.
One area the 360 does very well on is software sales due it its large user base.
So on excuses, just plain facts ...the 360 isnt dominating the PS3, well not unless you just using NA figures and want to forget about the rest of the world.

just to clarify a bit who are NPD? Google keeps throwing democratic germans and links to other sites talking about npd sales figures.

I'd disagree with you there. The Wii isn't a rival console, it's another console. For £100 more it offers a lot more than the Wii, so why would you mention it I don't know. As for 'ripping people off', what *******, they did far from that. In fact, they had it as an optional extra so that you didn't get ripped off.

Microsoft included the Wii in their sales spin, so they obviously think that the Wii is a rival console :p

The people who bought the almost-obsolete HD-DVD drive got ripped off I mean. I hope Microsoft do the decent thing and give those who bought it some free HD downloads from their inevitable movie download service.

NPD is a market research company that track sales figure.
The games figures we see from NPD are for North America only and they are compiled by estimating sales figures from the leading retailers in the US like Wal-mart etc.

LOL so how did they get ripped off? the people that bought it did so off their own back for their own reasons and its hardly obsolete not even almost. Did Sony rip off people with the Dual Shock 3, did Nintendo rip people off by limiting supply at Christmas....nevermind MS is bad ok :D

What about all the people that bought other branded HD-DVD drives, such as Toshiba etc? Should they get some sort of recompense?

It's not like Microsoft forced people to buy the thing.

The figures are probably about right for the American Market.

Yes, the 360 does very well in the US but fairly mediocre in Europe and absolutely dire in japan.

Plus the figures don't indicate actual company profit, just that the 360 and associated games are more expensive than the Wii and associated games.

I read Halo 3 beat wii play to be the biggest selling game.

Are the games more expensive?

Not really from my experience, especially with games now being re-released as 'Classics' for £20.

Can anyone tell me when all my hd-dvds will stop working? I need to know so that I know at which point I'm going to feel ripped off for paying £100 to get one foot into the HD market.

I really eagerly anticipate the day when/if Microsoft slumps into third place in sales behind the Wii and PS3. I would love to see the spin they put into that.
