Hi all. Just wondered what your stance was on this? I'll tell it as fairly as posssible!

I've sold a phone on ebay (for £80 ish) and stated online bank transfer as my preferred method of receiving payment, due to the delays involved in the cheque processing system. Purchaser sends me a cheque and three days later asks if I've depatched yet. I tell buyer that my policy is to wait for 7 days after clearance, as at this point, the cheque is fully guaranteed and cannot be stopped.

Mrs X replies getting all arsy and saying she's sending my comments to ebay with a complaint.

I'm just trying to protect myself from the oldest cheque fraud in the book, but should I be sending the item as soon as the cheque has credited my account, even if it could subsequently be reversed? :(

I only accept a cheque if I see the card that goes with it :p

and explain to her all the fraud there is with ebay your not taking a chance on her and that she would do the same. your an individual not a business.

Your not in the wrong.

If the buyer has a cheque book then surely they know that is usually takes 5 working days to get the funds.

For exmaple, you cash the cheque on monday. Its takes tuesday, wednesday and thursday to clear. Funds appear in your bank account on friday. You may post on friday or saturday, monday at the latest.

This buyer just has no clue. Your not in the wrong simple as. Ive had the same thing happen to me, its not good when eBay have to be involved.

Ive never heard of that either. Thought after 5 working days or so, once funds have appeared for a few days they have cleared. Never had funds taken away months after the transaction.

How's that work then? Never heard of that.

Can't find anything on google at the moment for actual times but.

Without your permission. that's not the same as it's your money. I'm not certain on the time frame, but:

If you accept a cheque that subsequently turns out to be fraudulent, you may be required to return the funds. See the section below for tips on Avoiding Cheque Fraud.

Not as bad as the ebay seller I'm dealing with. Refusing to refund me for an item I haven't recieved. Paypal aren't interested as it has now gone on longer than 60days.

My advice (as a fellow EBay user) for what it is worth.
Of the many "rules" I have, these include two:

1. Don't accept cheques - Just generally a pain and before long nowhere will accept them anyway, so get people used to surviving without them.
2. Don't deal in mobile phones - Just too many people attempting to scam, both buyers & sellers.

Your in the right. Who doesn't wait for the cheque to fully clear?

Tell her, politely, to shut her trap

I stopped accepting cheque's ages ago, if people can't or don't want to use Paypal I accept Postal Orders.
