New Drivers Cause HD3870 to Beat 8800GT with High RES & AA

The results are questionable though, how can an 8800GT go from 26 FPS to 4 by adding 4x extra AA additionally ?
And why is an 1950XTX faster than an old 8800GTS ?

Both of these things should never happen, and probably don't.

the only reason i can think of is that the gts they tested was a 320 mb version as opposed to the 512mb on the x1950xtx

there is not that much difference between a 8800gts 320 and a x1950xtx 512 in any case

I wont touch another ATI card after going to Nvidia and a 8800GT, best card ever;) ATI are way to small to compete with NV now, Nvidia have most publishers/developers in their pockets so games are always going to be optimised better for Nvidia hardware. AMD/ATI are on the slide, don't back a dead horse.;)

You better hope not otherwise the GPU market will be as stagnant as a week old pint left in the sun. Monopoly, slacked off development, complacent attitude and taking the market for granted is what will likely happen to a one manufacturer GPU market.

Some people are just too much. They must live on a different planet, that's the only explanation.

Everyone note that if Raven ever gets an ATI card you can officially own his ass by dragging up that silly post of his.

Raven actually used to be one of the most Pro ATi posters until he got the GT and turned full tilt.

Admittedly I was also very Pro ATi but I am far from singing NVIDIA's praises now I have a NVIDIA card.

I feel very much even towards both companies after this past year and will more than likely be buying a 3870X2 on Wed (providing it hands the GTX it's ass) :)

I'm sticking to the VFM mindset from now on.

I cant help but think the crossfirex drivers will help make things a little better for us again.

ati will catch up and take over nvidia because as the trend is with both companies in the past, the leader will sit on their *** bragging the other to come show what they got and each time the leader is beaten hands down and forced to crawl back up.

and tbh ati dont look too great right now but then who have nvidia got to work with? they've annoyed intel over the sli, amd own ati so they will never buy into them, and their own mobos are too expensive and not very good either. the market is a lot more open to ati than nvidia imho its just it will take time for ati to be able to use these connections over nvidia.

Absolutely, can anyone remember the 9800 and the FX series? It took Nvidia 2 generations to get back in the game. How daft would someone look now, if back then they'd said "oh no, never again will I go Nvidia, ATI is the nuts". Its just daft rabid fanboy silliness.

Its only a 'puter FFS, get out a little more. There's far bigger challenges in life than picking a side and sucking up.

True! but this forum ain't about the bigger challenges in life :
But that does not mean that i like the stupid bickering that goes on here.

lol what a useless thread:p

drivers mature, and things improve, but you never see massive improvements like that across the board - it just doesnt really happen. the 2900xt's were release what...7 months ago? the 3800's and all that jazz are the same cards. you'd think if there was something serious that they could fix in the drivers, that they'd get it done in less than 7 months. the inefficiant AA issues of the ati cores wont ever be fixed in software, not across the board:)

people have a valid point to mock a benchmark that doesnt include the relevant up to date cards on the latest drivers from BOTH sides. otherwise its a completely useless benchmark and artificially weights the scores in favour of one set of cards. how useful is that to us when we try to remain impartial? it isnt at all useful.

I guess only the ATI owners understand the implications of these latest improvements and what it will mean for the near future in driver improvements.

We've all been with ATI before, we know, once a product beds in, the drivers make tremendous improvements. Something nVidia have never really been able to do. ATI seem to know how to continually tweak their hardware for better performance.

It's why people who have been with ATI before weren't dissapointed with the initial benchmarks. They know ATI will get it right once they get the hardware right, and the hardware seems about right this time.

that is tosh, all of it. either you are saying the gefore 8 series drivers were perfect all along or they have been consistently crap. either way you are totally incorrect. the g80 came on leaps and bounds from when the cards were first released, thanks to drivers, so that blows your theory right out of the water. And id refrain from the 'only ati owners' comments as well, becuase that does nothing but stir up emotions. that is a discussion baord, not a playground.

Agreed but perspective is everything whether here or there or anywhere. Focusing all your rhetoric into a one sided perspective has its obvious shortcomings. That's what I was pointing out to Raven.

But that does not mean that i like the stupid bickering that goes on here.

Sometimes seemingly bickering is the shortest line of communication to get a point across.

if proof was ever needed that the 3870XT is a stonking card you need only look here.

look at who is in the number 1 and 2 positions on the first chart. 2 x 3870 V 3x 8800GTX and theres not much between them. These cards were built with a view to being ran in a multi GPU setting, and with the low prices of them (3870`s now available for £117 from some places) its an excellent value card.
