ive been with my company 6months but for the work ive got involved in my wage is low. i dont mind sharing what im on. Im on 16k but i live alone and have hardly anything left, i finished a degree last year now im a IT technician/helpdesk

i wana ask nicely but dont know how to approach or what to do if get rejected. i think i deserve a payrise, i do a lot of work outside my normal description.

Email your boss asking for a meeting about your current duties/pay/contract sort of thing, then try and wangle it from there on.

Sleep with your boss.

did you have a probation period? once thats over (usually 3/6 months) its not too cheeky to ask for one. From my previous permie roles its the norm to get a payrise after probation.

Same position as you about 2 months ago. Just sent an email to my boos asking if i could have a prviate informal chat then explained that i wanted a payrise and listed reasons why i thought i deserved it, then a month later i got 11% increase :)

Treat it as a 6 monthly review since you started.

Lay down your case, explain what you've achieved and where you see yourself going. State how you feel you've contributed, and then plainly ask if he would consider reviewing your salary. It's that simple, don't be shy or embarrassed, you've got to have some get up and go attitude if you want to achieve merits in this world, don't expect things to be handed to you - if you don't ask you don't get. Don't rely on organic growth for your salary increase either or else you'll be waiting for ages for significant increases.

Sell yourself and be true to yourself.

I'm on £16k a year too but i live with my wife and 2 kids, try cutting down on stuff you have (internet, Cards, Phone, etc) which is what i've started doing and I can manage on 16k with a family lol

i would never email my boss about this matter.

I normally go and ask the boss for a word (stressing the importance). Then i say while i love working for the company but i have no choice but find another job where they will componsate me fairly for my talents. I then speil on about ways i have developed since last pay review focusing on how i add value to the buisness and department.

Then i leave it and always within a week he asks me back in to discuss salary. It can also help to book a few mornings off and turn up in the afternoon in your best suit ;)

Its not that hard and theres nothing to be embarrassed about, just set up a meeting and ask for a pay review.

There are obviously people who work along side you that get paid more than you. Ask what it is that you have to do to get to the next pay grade and then the next etc!! you need incentive, you want them to give you that!! so go ask and ask with confidence.

If you do arrange a meeting, find some 'ammo' to use. Look around on jobsites and jobs papers etc. Find jobs that are similar to yours and obviously in the same area and see what the pay is like. Use this as a bargaining tool.

I just walked into my boss and said any chance of a pay rise?

He said NO!

But you never know until you try.

He did however offer me a better higher paid job a couple of months later perhaps he was impressed by my ballsy attitude.

Walk up, look polite and blurt out the following:

"Eya mayte me thinks i iz guuud at muh job, so i reconns lyk i shuud be gerin sum extra dosh lyk, dunt cha finks..

Lemi no blud."

:D I dare you.

I remember being in the same sort of situation as the OP when I first started, (and I was on quite a bit less than him at the time for the same sort of role). The way the company worked I ended up doing something about it 18 months into the job instead of 6 months, (they weren't sure what to do with me for the first 6 months and then I was in a really strong position once I was settled into the new job and site).

I sent my bosses boss an email laying out my position, (my boss had no say over our pay). I did some research and found out what sort of salary I should have been on for the job, my experience and the location and it was a lot more than I was getting. I noted this and also noted the principal things that I had done in my time at the company and what responsibilities I now had over what I started with. Unlike you I didn't have a forum available to me to run it past so I went over it with one of my colleagues I trusted and I made sure my boss was aware too.

Had a meeting with him and ended up with several grand pay rises multiple times a year over several years ending up with me reaching, (at the end of sequence), a salary 2.5x my starting one :)

Don't be confrontational and layout as much relevant information as possible. Also be aware that depending on your company you boss pay be limited in what he can do so you may have to go elsewhere to get more (which is what I should do now).

ive got a one2one later. ive asked him for a meeting beacuse i need a few things aswell like a company phone as i keep using my personal one and its starting to cost me a fortune plus my work load has increased incredibly and im just going to ask him for a rise, everyone ive asked has said i deserve one, even our finance department so ive got a good case
