Three laptops, but which one?

Vista runs like a dog because of the fact that laptop drives are half the speed of desktop ones.

And a computer with 448MB on Vista won't?
My HTPC has a 2.5" for aboot, granted it's slower than 3.5" but it's not dog slow. 2GB of RAM in XP helps here.

Pentium 4-M 1.6s do exist, although I'm not sure if IBM used them for the T41..

I know the P4-M exists, its the ThinkPad L41 that doesn't!

The T40 series were all Centrino. The short lived T30 is the only ThinkPad P4-M machine I'm aware of.

1->2GB didn't really make a huge difference, the disk speed was the limiting factor. Same with XP (except XP was quicker, but still obviously not as smooth as a 3.5' drive). I've found this with several laptops.

Fair enough.

I'd go for the IBM and avoid the celery personally

Celeron used to be very bad but the name Celeron M 440 suggests to me that it's the newest revision based on Core architecture not netburst, so it's basically a 1.8Ghz C2D with only 1 core, which in fact performs miles better than a Mobile Pentium 4-M @ 1.6Ghz, it must be old I mean even my 4 year-old laptop comes with MP4-M 2Ghz.

So out of the three in OP I'd go for the Compaq, but if you like smaller screen go for the Samsung R20.

i feel we have distroyed this thread :( he only wanted to know what one of three and we have just thrown other options at him left, right and centre. though he'll probably walk away with a better deal now ;)

Thanks guys, you have helped a lot. I'm going to go with the compaq, although my heart says the IBM. I will post pics of my new lappy once it's ordered. Just joking.

cant belive I missed this deal  I'm in need of a laptop around that spec- price

DDR2 RAM is a cheap upgrade these days anyway - £26 or so for 2GB - so don't let the RAM sway your decision too much. :)

WOW! i was going to say balls to what you said (lappy ram uber expensive as i mustve paid at least £120 ish for 2x 1 gig sticks about a year ago...and it was around £150 for 1 2 gig stick so i was well put off upgrading to 4 gig dual channel)

But i had a quick check and jesus... you're right i could upgrade my lappy to 4 gig no problem! for £60! (2 gig at the moment but going by these prices i could upgrade to 4 gig 2x2 no problem)

You reckon i will see a great improvement in anything moving from 2 gig to 4 gig?

thanks for the tip :D

edit: MM is right; keep an eye on the dell outlet for deals
