binge drinking

Binge drinking has never been the problem.... i have never really understood the whole 1 drink to relax thing.... when i drink it is to get mashed... i may act more of a fool as a result... but i have never vandalised anything, i have never gotten into a fight... its all about the people involved

Price, Age, Curfew are all kneejerk reactions to try and cover up that this country is going down the toilet

People talk about the difference between European drinking culture and ours. Well one difference is that for a start, people are crammed into pubs and clubs like veals, instead they all sit down at tables and waitresses come round and serve their beer. Much more civilized than a night out in any British town centre. Maybe that's the answer, only give licenses out to bars that have enough seats for everyone to sit down? I think there is a link between overcrowding and violent behaviour, so would make sense - lets see the big drinks companies claim to be acting responsibly when they campaign against that!

Increasing the minimum age and making alcohol more expensive aren't good solutions. Unfortunately, binge drinking has become part of our culture and there's very little that can actually be done about it :(

It isn't fair to punish those that aren't idiots, I am able to get drunk but don't start fights, I usually do some dancing and fall asleep.

We simply need harsher punishments for those caught fighting.

i agree with this.

i can get smashed. but i still have no intension at all to get myself into a fight. im not a violent person. even when drunk if someone starts pushing me around i am man enough to walk away.

i dont get why some people find that they need to get themself into a fight when drunk. I think that maybe bars should stop serving those that appear like they maybe a problem. people that do seem to have had enough. i dont see in many bars around her any barman / maid saying "you've had enough im not serving you" they just give them what they want more and more booze

Raising the drinking age was fairly dumb. I've seen 15-16 year olds that look older then me, and I'm 24. Knew a kid that had a full beard at 14..

Police need more power. Drinking on the continent is just so much better. They go out to have a good time, not to drink and fight.

I've had a scarp or two while drunk, but only because some chav **** decided he didn't like me because I wore glasses (true story)

Sorry to single you out but this sentence highlights a great deal of the problem we have with our attitude to drink. It seems that getting drunk is a desirable state to many in the UK, whereas it really shouldn't be. To think that fighting is the only undesirable consequence of drinking is incorrect - there's are many others not least the damage done to one's body, and potential for further damage.

It took me a long time to realise this, but I have a much better night out if I do not get drunk. I hope more people will realise this in time.

I am 19 and people at uni are unable to control their drink intake. They are sick everywhere, dont remember anything of the night before etc etc you get the idea.

Something needs to be done Raising the age to 21 WOULD work, but then it isnt fair on the 90+ % of us who do it sensibly.

I agree completely with the first paragraph; I'm 18 and it's the same here (and every other uni I'm sure). However, raising the age to 21 would not work because the problem is not just with 18-21 year olds.

No it would not because people would drink regardless.

Actually, a lot of the problem stems from people going out on the lash and getting hammered at bars, clubs, etc. If the drinking age was raised to 21, then they wouldn't get into (most of) the bars/clubs in the first place. But of course, as I've just said, the problem isn't just with under 21s :)

The main problem with the youth of today is that they have not learned to respect anything, whether it be people, authority or possessions.

They need to be taught respect at an early age, that there is a difference between right and wrong. This feeble society teaches them no values whatsoever.

There is simply a massive social problem in the UK, and no changing of regulations and laws will doing anything in the short term.

The easiest and solution is simply to emigrate. No such problems here in Switzerland for the most part. The youth drink culture is on the rise in a few locations, but this is being swiftly dealt with by the government. Strong penalities, heavy police presence, ban on alcohol sales after 10pm. But this is only for a few places in the whole country.

The legal age for wine and beer is 16, although the rules are relaxed and anyone from 14 drinks regularly. The difference is simply culture.
