8800GTX vs 3870x2

Unless you wanna just get a new toy for benchmark "fun" then no it's probably not worth it.

My 8800GT plays everything I throw at it fine at 1920x1080 including Crysis on High, I'm guessing it's only worth getting an X2 over a GTX at a high res like 2560x1600 where singles start to chug.

Your definition of "fine" must be 15 FPS then, because on a GT you won't be getting much more than that in Crysis on high at 1920x1200.

Unless the core is at 1.5Ghz :).

Honestly, looking at reviews you should just stay with the GTX. Unless you can get £250 odd for your GTX I would not recommend it.

Depends in what places of the game.

I also find a GT less than "fine" and 1920x1200. Really seems to struggle at times.

(The above is all Crysis talk).

Im wondering whether it's worth buying a 3870X2 and flogging my 8800GTX

Anyone think it's worth it?

Also thinking about it, but probably will not yet, performance increase doesn't seem quite enough yet.

yeah i would tbh, infact get 2

Now two on the other hand, could be interesting :) Would still ideally prefer a single-card solution but will be keeping a close eye on 2 x 3870X2 results.

I would honestly say IMHO, if you already have an 8800 GTS 512MB or GTX/Ultra, there is no reason to get an 3870X2. Performance on these cards is fantastic anyway, and given how new this new push for crossfire native cards is by ATI, it will take a while to iron the bugs out.

Hang on to your gtx etc, and wait till the next series comes out :)

The possible exception to that would be if you do have an ultra, and you can still get a VERY good price for it.

I'm in the same boat here but I will probably wait. If I get the X2 I would have to upgrade my power supply as well (I have a 500w liberty), I'm not prepared to spend that much money!

Its not worth it from a GTX, just clock it to an Ultra, as an Ultra beats the X2 with AA on in quite a few, and no one shoud be buying cards like these if they not going to use AA. :)

ocuk seems to be expensive for the 3870 x2.. ordered mine yesterday from ocuk (its arriving today) and paid £309.31 delivered. if you look elsewhere u can get this for £42.32 cheaper delivered. wish i hadnt been that greedy and waited a day for other retailers to have it in stock

so comparing it with the £234.99 oem gtx of ocuk, i would still get the boxed 3870x2 for just few quid more.

i said to a friend last night, "wait a week and it will drop £50"

8800GTX, it's better value plus in the only two reviews that actually tested gameplay the X2 didn't really do that well.

EDIT: Didn't realise you already had a GTX, keep it, don't be stupid.

Depends on what your objective is. If you want the absolute fastest single card out there at the moment then yeah get one.

But otherwise look at what the cost/benefit for you would be...GTX is an awesome card for sure so whilst the x2 is quicker is it that much quicker to warrant whatever (net) cash you have to spend after the sale of your GTX. If you can get a good price on the GTX so the outlay is small then why not, otherwise i'd think hard about it.

Then again, whose to say what 2nd hand prices of the 8800GTX will do when new nVidia cards come out.

I would have to agree with this statement. On the other hand, if you're gonna be upgrading (say from 1950pro as in my case) you could consider it but certainly look at what games you will be playing as there is quite a stark contrast between certain games.

I think i may well go for this next week maybe to see if the price fluctuates at all and once a few user benchmarks have come out.

GTX is better all round, get the 3870 X2 and if you try to play a game thats not crossfire supported yet, then your going to be running it on 1 very expensive single 3870, until ATi get some drivers out that add the support for that game, where as the GTX will cut through everything full whack. :)

To be fair though, AMD do release new drivers every month without fail, so it may not be to long before they add the support.

Blah blah blah, paid too much... ;)

If your not happy refuse delivery, or send it back. Your entitled as part of the Distance Selling Regulations.

Is interesting to find out whether two £230+ OEM GTX's outperform 2x £290+ 3870's though. (ocuk prices)
