Yet more SKU's from Sony

Apart from the fact that the majority of punters wont have heard of most of those sku's (as they were not all available in the same region) and joe public wont know whats available in japan or US - why is a larger hdd such a big thing?

Would be nice if they could lose all the curvy elements of the design. I'd rather consoles looked more like DVD players tbh. Granted the 360 at least acheives that to some degree but the PS3 looks awful.

I am a PS3 owner by the way! I've got the 40gb model which does the job nicely but I have thought about buying a 200gb hdd.

So what are the differences between the various versions?

I'm just confused now.

Which ones are backwards compatible with PS2?

White ps3's do look nice mind, if it's more simply because of the hard drive and no back compat. I'd rather get the 40gb white =/

All but the 40gb as far as I'm aware.

The differences are hard drive sizes, and various cosmetics. Aswell as the area in the world they are available in.

For instance, We had 2. 40gb and 60gb. 60gb being replaced possibly by an 80gb. That's it.

Where as Japan have 5 different versions, the 20gb, The 40gb, The 80gb and the 120gb, with a rumoured 160gb. (not sure if any of these lack the BC)

Not sure about america either.

Sony: No plans to release a 120GB PlayStation 3 in the UK

A Sony Computer Entertainment Europe spokesman has said "We do not currently have any plans to release a 120GB PlayStation 3 in the UK." This comes after rumors that a 120GB/160GB PS3 was on the way as the 80GB is phased out in USA.

To future PS3 owners: Just buy the cheapest SKU and upgrade the HDD yourself :)

You'd think Sony would have learn't from Microsoft offering so many SKU's, this gen's SKU's is ridiculous.

At least models are named by harddrive size so its hardly going to get too confusing as to whats what, unlike M$ which completely renamed all thier units!

Think that is definatly the best option. Does anyone know if that 320gb 2.5" Toshiba hdd that is up for preorder on ocuk would work with the ps3? If so im sure a lot of people will go for that over forking out for a new console with less disk space.

I fail to see the point of this:

- Was 80GB not enough space? I know PS3 games often install to the HDD, but still, do you really need that much?
- If you do want more space, you can upgrade it yourself!
- BC is a major concern, at least for now. With the huge number and range of games on the PS2, having things a little murky with regards to which have full BC, which are a mixture of software+hardware BC and which have none, is super confusing.

It soon fills up. Also - Play TV is coming soon. You need decent amount of free space to run a PVR.

I'm sure I could fill it if I tried but how hard is it to delete stuff. But only if you want to use it, and haven't got a PVR already like Sky+, BTVision etc. Besides, 'coming soon' is so vague.

I mean the extra space is hardly a bad thing, but I just can't see many being overly keen to get the extra space. The 360 needed a larger HDD than 20GB, and I suspect the PS3 is getting an 120GB (or more) model just to one up the 360.

Don't see why it wouldn't work. Unless FAT32 has a size limit?
