According to a VUNET article:

Broadband ISP Virgin Media has announced its plans for upgrading customers' broadband systems. Beginning late February customers with a 4Mbit/s service on Virgin Media's 'L' tier package will be upgraded free to a 10Mbit/s service. Completion is expected by late summer.

Virgin Media have also said it will be extending its top-of-the-range 50Mbit/s service, offering it to customers who currently have a 20Mbit/s connection.

No more stuck on 4mb because mum doesn't see the point of it for me :D

Still this is awesome news, especially the release of 50mb for anyone who can get 20mb.
 
How many more free upgrades are Virgin customers going to get.

My mate was originally on 512kb, then went to 2mb and is now on 4mb but the price still hasnt changed and now he is getting 10mb.

Not bad at all :rolleyes:
 
Maybe they should sort out their service first before offering 'speed upgrades' and I use the term very lightly!
 
Apparently the 50mbit service will be running a new tech, which means it doesn't affect the speed of others, so they get the full speed and the rest of the 'old' network will speed up for those as well (because it is just dealing with the slower services).

Whether or not it works out that way or not we'll have to see.
 
Hmm, we will see. Im on 4Mb, and to be fair - they are quite good, but I know so many people on 20Mb who just cant get anything like their advertised speed (even with the rate shaping) so I cant see how 50Mb will work. If it does, then work are going to upgrade me a new connection.. :D

Service is brilliant here too. I think it must just be the minority that have problems. Nobody moans about having brillant service, however everyone who doesnt does, if that makes sense :D

50Mbit will be using DOCSIS 3 as DOCSIS 2 is limited to 42Mbit sec downstream. The majority of 20Mb users will have to have equipment upgrades.

Edit - Unless you are in an ex-c&w area where EuroDocsis 2.0 can support upto 55Mbit/sec, (Ex Telewest and NTL are DOCSIS) Although i assume VM will just roll out 50Mbit in a DOCSIS 3 to all areas.

I would assume they go to DOCSIS 3 across the network, from what i can tell they've been working pretty hard to get everything standardised across the network in other areas, and it's cheaper/easier to support a system where everyone is on the same system/hardware regardless of where they are (IIIRC under NTL/BY they had a number of different systems for each service).

It'll be interesting to see if they give VIP package customers the upgrade free, and hopefully the move to DOCSIS 3 should help with the network congestion (from memory it uses different frequencies that are currently unused with V1.x).
