So my friends decide to go out tonight and consume alcoholic beverages. They ask if I will pick them up later tonight and I say sure no problem, I'm a good friend.

So Im driving and get to an intersection where I want to turn left, the light just turns orange and the cop goes through and then so do I. now all of a sudden the cop stop, switches lanes and pulls me over.

He says I ran a red light, which I didn't as it was yellow and there's no way he could have seen anyway as he was through the intersection so could not of seen the light change.

The fact is because we were still rolling if I had tried to break hard for the light the guy behind me would have ended up rear ending me and even he managed to go straight on through the light.

I will be contesting this ticket and was just wondering if there is anything I can add to my defense?

Im a little shooken up as this is the first time I've been pulled over.

The apparent violation is: 40-6-20
:(

next time run an amber light when theres no cop in front of you lol.

Running amber is not illegal

The whole point of the amber light is to introduce a grace period inbetween GO and STOP. Without, drivers would have to slam on their breaks whenever a red light appears. In this case, it is my understanding the cop ran the amber light then assumed the OP must have run red since he followed after him.

this is exactly what has happened.

I really cant afford to be spending $115 on a pathetic ticket right now, does anybody know how I can draw out the scenario on the computer?

I also plan to go back and film the time taken for it to turn form yellow to red, anybody know how long this is likely to be?

I'd imagine US varies from the UK in terms of some laws and how you can contest them, but I'd imagine unless there is CCTV footage of you driving through the amber to back you up; you're not gonna have much to stand on.

Running orange although not illegal it is technically a bookable offence, it doesnt mean go, it means get ready to go or get ready to stop. But even with that said, it'd take one really petty narky copper to book someone for it.

Unlucky dude.

The cops decision is resting on his presumption that you ran a red. If he doesn't have specific evidence to back that up, I don't see how he has a case against the OP here...

Make it clear when you object to the ticket that you did what you thought was safest.

In the UK..

AMBER means ‘Stop’ at the stop line. You may go on only if the AMBER appears after you have crossed the stop line or are so close to it that to pull up might cause an accident

If a car has already gone through on amber ahead of you then you are definitely not supposed to follow.

'Don't be an amber gambler'

By your definition, the cop also broke the law.

Googled to http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/h2g2/A9559407

Amber— this warns traffic that it should stop unless it is unsafe to do so. In the UK it is legal to pass through an amber light, as the phase exists to warn drivers not yet at the junction that they will have to stop.

However, the highway code agrees with you http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/TravelAndTransport/Highwaycode/Signsandmarkings/index.htm

Either way, i doubt the cop has a leg to stand on. Contest.

He doesn't have proof you went through a red.

If you have a witness then say and get them to back you up that you went through amber BECAUSE you felt it was not safe to stop.
