Hiya

Firstly, I apologise as I know nothing about cars  Oh, it's Teki187's GF (hope this is OK)

I currently have a 52 plate Corsa. I have owned it for two years and have paid out about £1000 in MOTs and repairs in this time. My MOT and service is due in four weeks and it will cost me around £500 (aparantly) as I need four new tyres, the tracking done and an oil leak fixed. These are the KNOWN problems and no doubt there will be other things that come up.

I went to the Vauxhall dealership yesterday and saw a 2007 Astra (1.6) with 14k miles on the clock for £7100 (reduced). First off, is this a good deal?

So, here is my dilema. Getting the car will stretch me financially, but is do-able (will just have a bit less to spend on xmas and birthdays etc). However, the MOT is not due until April 2010 and it comes with a year's service, and so this is one less financial worry that I have from my current Corsa.

They will offer me £1800 for my car, without it's MOT and service (so saving me about £500 straight away). Is this a fair offer?

What are people's opinions? What will be more sensible ... spending more a month but not having unexpected costs, or staying as I am but having to have continuing repairs?

Thanks for any help :D

I can't see how it would cost £500 for 4 tyres, fix an oil leak and do the tracking.

Tyres should be less than £200 easily, tracking about £30 and an oil leak - depending on how bad - should be less than £100 to fix!

Newer cars aren't necessarily more reliable, or cheaper to run.

My advice would be to MOT and then sell your Corsa. Then buy something that isn't crap like a Yaris/Corolla :P

£500 for all that, saw you coming  You haven't got 19" profiles on have you? ;/

Echo Commited, don't bother with the Corsa, it's improving, but there is no point stretching yourself, and if something did go wrong can you afford to fix it?

I take it that £500 is a main dealer price. At very least get the tyres done somewhere else. Ask around and try to find a good local garage you should be able to get that £500 right down.

It's going to cost you £5300 to change to the Astra (plus interest costs on any money you borrow). Even with the worst luck in the world your Corsa won't cost you £5300 over the next 3 years.

With a years MOT you should be able to get a lot more then £1800 for you Corsa.

Essentially you're spending over £5000 to save just 1/10 of that, £500.

THIS IS MADNESS!

Mytyres.co.uk = bargin. I got quoted £80 for two 13's at National for some dodgey Avons, or I can get some EcoContact3's fitted and delived for the same price. :D

I find the websites prices to be good but if you have a spare 20mins to ring around then I have always been able to find the tyres supplied and fitted locally by one of the more reputable garages for less.

I guess the garage is ripping me off! My Corsa is standard - no modifications. The tyres are aparantly £50 each and then I have to pay for fitting. It is a dealership that is doing the repairs.

Thanks so much for the advice.

I have not got the foggiest about the leak's location ... just know that when I pull off the drive there is some oil where my car had been!

Maybe it be best to keep my car then?

It's not just to save this comming repairs' costs - it's the ongoing price that my car may cost me that I am thinking about.

I am tempted to go to a local garage but I really don't know how to tell if one is good or not. Atleast with the dealership I have a 12 month guarentee (sp?) with the repairs.

Do you know the tyre size?

It's printed on the side of the tyre and will read something like:

195 / 65 R15

I believe you are assuming that a new car will have £0 repair costs though. This is highly unlikely!

It's fair enough if you have had enough of your Corsa but why stretch yourself financially?

As we have so many members here from all over the UK someone will be able to recommend a garage in Nott. to you. :)

So your Corsa has cost you £1000 in repairs in 2 years - this is double what its cost to repair my BMW - and you want to buy another Vauxhall?

Seriously - dont buy another one.

I would take it to a Vauxhall specialist rather than a main dealer. Main dealers rip you off, fact!. An indy specialist should be able to do you a decent job and not charge the earth.

Get your tyres done at your own convenience on your own "site" (work or home) by etyres.co.uk

I had the missus' punto's tyres changed (all 4) for £160 (Firestones so not a rubbish brand) including balancing, disposal etc etc
