Sharia Law 'Unavoidable' in the UK

Read it properly people. He's only talking in terms of marital/financial disputes. Overriding common law regarding murder/assault would still stand.

I don't think he's advocating honour killings and oppression.

What do you expect from an Archbishop appointed by Tony Blair? A man who has done more to destroy England than anyone else.

I certainly don't accept that Sharia law is unavoidable in the UK. In fact, I would echo the sentiments of the former Australian PM who said that anyone who wants Sharia law in our country should leave.

It's still putting our law (the one that they reside in too) second to theirs, they can have a council by all means, but it should not have any power or ability to control whatsoever. Fascism doesn’t work.

exactly. most other comments in this thread will be predictable daily mail type comments.

So you believe a minority should be able to police themselves inside the state when a perfectly acceptable system is already in place and has no issue with dealing with said minority?

Of course he isn't advocating honour killings.

But I find it strange, and slightly worrying that he seems to think it would aid social cohesion?

I'm sorry but you just can't have two legal systems operating in parallel in the same domain. Just to raise a few issues that immediately spring to mind.

What if the two parties can't agree what legal system should be used, would they be forced to use one or the other?

Would a president set in one legal system apply in the other?

I suspect many of the principals of Sharia law are against EU human rights legislation or would contradict UK law.

If you were convicted under Sharia law could you appeal under English law or visa versa? If so what the point?

Who the hell is going to pay for a second legal system?

It's undemocratic as you can't vote for a representative of overturn or amend Sharia law. As such it’s against the rules of a constitutional monarchy which this country is and is not something I wish to change.

Laws may conflict leading to confusion and people not knowing where they stand.

Lastly, there are lots of laws that are unpopular in this country for one reason of another. There are means of adding/revoking/amending them without introducing a second legal system. It's called parliament and we have election once every five years. If you allow a leagal system for one minority where dose it end. How about one for paedophiles?

Why not have a listen to the full interview, I'm sure he'll explain it a bit more than could be done in a (frankly sensationalist) short news item.

I find the idea very disturbing, we should not be enforcing laws based on anyone's opinion or religious views.

Unfortunately, too many people of all beliefs think their views are better than everyone elses and should be codified in law...

I think he's talking out of his backside.
I'm all for people coming over here to work, you know fair play, unless they are pulling stupid crap like this. It's like a hostile takeover or some crap, if enough people in a minority complain, the whole of england is branded racist and a new law must be passed.
It's ridiculous, i thought it was settling down but no, obviously not.
