IT helpdesk.

It is..I also have relevant experience. Including as a private tutor. Yet apparently this is worthless....

What do you have? What have you been tutoring? I dont understand how you have been tutoring if you dont know the very basics of a windows setup?

No I don't - they're not free like Linux so where would I have encountered them except at those kind of jobs...if I did know them I wouldn't be posting here. I don't pretend I know everything, thats why I asked the questions.

All microsoft products have trial versions you can order, download/order Server/exchange 2003, set up a domain and just play around. It doesnt sound like you are very determined.

Who said it was worthless? No need to be bitter mate, Anewbe4u has not done or said anything wrong, in fact congrats to him for getting that sort of wage for that sort of job. Lucky bloke. :)

I left school with standard GCSE results.

Since then I've worked solidly in the computer industry, my CV has a long lists of skills which companies such as this require.

Oh I'm ITIL trained also, might have something to do with it :)

EDIT - Would you have turnd down the salary and said "sorry boss, I'm not worth that"?

If you are telling the truth and I can see why people wouldn't then well done to you.

I wasn't teaching MCSE or anything like that...just level 1 and 2 qualifications.

Fine. I'll have to ask a friend if I can use another machine, because all I have now is one laptop and no electricity supply in my own home.

Richdog - who said I was annoyed at anewbe4u? All credit to him, but I wasn't talking about that, please don't misunderstand. Unless you mean the part about GCSEs, but that isn't specific to just him....

 You have no electricity in your house?

Im really not trying to sound abrupt, im only trying to help. Grab a few cheap boxes, just good enough to slap a copy of windows 2k/xp on them, perhaps one good enough to whack vista onto as this is emerging and is coming on all new machines now. Also grab a basic server perhaps with a tape drive so you can play with backup exec (can be old as you like within reason) and whack server 2003 and exchange on it.

Then just play, you'll pick it up in no time :)

What are Level 1 & Level 2 qualifications?

GCSE and below equivalents. Level 2 is GCSE, Level 1 is half a GCSE.

 You have no electricity in your house?

The landlord cut it to pieces a while ago. No, I can't do anything about it, I'm a lodger, and I'm not in employment right now so I can't get anywhere better. If you want the whole story theres MSN, this is an IT helpdesk thread. I've already hijacked it as it is ;)

Ahh sorry mate must have misunderstood you. :)

What's ITIL? And no, of course not. It's good of course, as long as you enjoy the work. But we're straying off topic somewhat by flattering you :p.

Jealous much?
Well, considering I earn more and have a job I consider interesting, not really.

I'm in first line support, but it's application specific, so fairly easy.

Spend half my time on here, and I love the team I'm in!

Currently get ~12K, but I'm agency.. should go up to 22K in a month when I get my contract :P

Only previous experience I had was working for a school for a month, for free.. I did it just to get some experience :)

And I wouldn't deny being jealous of anewbe4u.. sounds like we do pretty much exactly the same thing, but he gets double my wage! well played :D

I think whats annoying is when you put time and effort in, and get nothing back but the sack, and no wages...and still nothing months later. With unemployed people being made to work for free as part of new deal, its making the situation even worse - they can hire and fire at will, no rights and no pay. It completely cannabalises and skews the market.

Trying to find more info on that, did you do it whilst at work?

If you have any sense you get work to send you on it and pay for it. You will need a valid reason for having the training.

After doing my MCSE+Security and CCNA I want out of the technical side so I am doing ITIL/Prince2 in order to give my 6+ years iof "Service Desk" and Process Management some weight qualification wise so I can go off and do what I want to do.

Lordsplodge - Prince2, is that more project management orientated?

Ive got ITIL at foundation level and wondering whether to forge ahead and go the whole hog.

Re the electricity thing, how are you living? If i get a powercut then i go out, cant do anything at home. How do you wash your clothes? How is your water and boiler system circulated? How do you see when its dark outside! How do you cook?

Confused, when my power goes off my house shuts down.

No, he just cut the power to specific parts of the building that I use, ie the room I sleep in. Which is why I don't hang around there. Its only good to sleep in now, and even then it gets pretty cold at night...
