IT helpdesk.

No, he just cut the power to specific parts of the building that I use, ie the room I sleep in. Which is why I don't hang around there. Its only good to sleep in now, and even then it gets pretty cold at night...

No way any rent would be leaving my account for those conditions, that is absolutely disgusting.

He doesn't get anything, not that he seems to care. Seems more interested in blackmailing me tbh. Either way, I can't do stuff like run multiple PCs with no electricity supply.

To be honest id suggest you just get a supermarket job for the time being, sort out a proper house/flat or whatever. I dont understand though, you seem to imply that you live there for free? Why would a landlord house someone for free?

I got an interview with Wetherspoons a week ago, did well according to the manager. Failed BAA's checks so I couldn't work there (Heathrow T5).

I think hes just too lazy to get me removed, or enjoys blackmailing me. Given that he has a fulltime job I suspect the rental income probably makes little odds to him. I'll pay if he reconnects the electricity though...

Fine. I'll have to ask a friend if I can use another machine, because all I have now is one laptop and no electricity supply in my own home.

You could always look at using the Microsoft Virtual Machine stuff (so long as your machine has at least 1gb ram), fairly sure it is free (at least the PC version of it is). If you buy or borrow the official microsoft press study guides for MCSE etc you get a 180 day trial version of windows server which is a good place to start.

With regards ITIL there was a bit of a discussion on it a month or so back (so have a quick search) and had quite a few posts with regards what is involved. The ITIL qualificiations are moderated/governed by APMG now, the ISO 20000 is the international standard for Service Management that is based primarily on the ITIL V2 processes but also:

Specifies a number of closely related service management processes

Identifies that relationships exist between these processes, and that these relationships will be dependent on their application within an organization

Provides guideline objectives and controls to enable an organization to deliver managed services

Glad this thread popped up as Im in the process of getting a new job and have re-evaluated my expected salary :P

Haha, I wish you luck :)

sr4470 - After that little MSN chat where you're clearly a bit strange, don't turn down advice, even if its not what you want to hear.

Wouldn't bother with a VM environment with 512MB. 1GB would be good more would be better. Depends what you want to do though - if you want a server and client (excluding the client you're already running) then 2GB would be much better.

Ok, but thats not going to help me learn how to run a network.. there must be another way of doing it.

Just get a supermarket job or something and get a proper place, your accomodation sounds very strange. Not having electricity is frankly ridiculous.

Fair enough.

If you're going to call me names, I'm not interested in talking to you. I will report you to a moderator if you continue it.

Edit: I'm a little disappointed you posted like that, because you sounded like a nice enough chap earlier in the thread. I take back what I said.

I have recently got my MCSA and have been working at a school as 1st line support, starting salary £17400, which isnt great but am 100% happier than where i was working (in a warehouse) and also i am now gaining experience in the field that i want to make a career in.

Fair enough.

Don't make me post the MSN convo on the forum, you turned it round when all I was doing was trying to help. You blocked me in fact.

EDIT - I am nice.

Fair enough.

Where are you hooked to the net if you dont even have electricity? You dont seem to want to help yourself, get off your arse and get a job, even a rubbish one. Then get proper living conditions.

You can then look to learn some basic windows skills and apply for low end helpdesk roles if IT is where you want to go. Prove yourself there and 30k isnt hard to achieve after a few years.

You wont get a salary for nothing, you need to help yourself.

Helpdesks are great ways to get into IT. 'on the cheap.'

I did helpdesking, 2nd line and now (for 2 years) 2nd line/in the field, with company car etc. I think I've done resonable well for my age. Found it quite easy as well :).
