Opinions on Nissan Primera GT

Thanks a lot for the great replies. Could anyone tell me what fraction of GTLEs there are in that reg range compared to GTs? Just wondering whether it's worth waiting for one.

Thanks again.

Well, im not sure on the exact fraction but i know its not LOADS of them in comparison and they are generally on later vehicles Post 1998. (mine is a Dec 1999 so one of the last) they were made to commemorate the Touring car win so production only consisted after that until the v/w plate.

There is also the option of a GT SE, the "Mystic" Green, which has trick flip paint green/purple. This also has leather upholstry (full, not half like the normal GT) and als has unique 16" rims.

Id say that, unless there is something about the LE that you really cant live without, buy the best one you can for the money regardless of whether its an LE.

Info for you from wiki;

To celebrate the two victories in 1998, Nissan UK released a limited edition of 400 'GTSE' Models, with 16" AZEV alloy wheels, two-tone 'flip' ChromaFlair "Mystic" green paint, following the special theme to the interior which featured full leather seating with green piping seats, steering wheel and a Momo gearknob.

To celebrate the 1999 "clean sweep" they released a limited edition 'GTLE' model with 16" multi-spoke Enkei alloy wheels, full leather interior with silver piping, Momo gearknob and a colour choice of flame red, kuro black, starburst silver, and Nordic blue.

Thanks again for the reply Nick. I was thinking that I would just get the first decent one that came along regardless of whether it was an LE or not. I'd expect the LEs to be at a bit of a premium too so I'll probably get a standard GT. Also I hate the flip paint on the GTSE so I definitely won't be getting one of them.

What year did the GTs get the trip computer and what does it show? Also I've noticed that some have cd changers but some don't, I assume this was an optional extra? Is there somewhere I can find out what the options were when new?

Oh, one last thing, what sort of MPG do you get around town/motorway driving?

Thanks again for the great help.

really? i dont feel like my GT has a stiff set up really? maybe because my car before was a rover coupe with rock solid suspension, but certainly wouldn't say the gt is stiff

Never driven a GT, however my poxy 1.6 is really harsh over bumps, and I can only expect the GT to be noticeably worse with its harder suspension and lower profile tyres.

I used to think the mk1 Mondeo Si I had for a while was bad enough but this takes Bone Jarring™ to another level.

mpg wise from a long motorway run around 38mpg or so, from short trips and town driving around 32mpg, long a-road stint at around 55-60mph can see 45+mpg

trip computer shows;

Clock
outside temperature
miles left in tank
average mpg since last reset
miles done since last reset
time driven since last reset
average speed

Hi, maybe i can help with some of the questions. Yeh the LE's come with a bit of a premium as there were only 300 ever made (IIRC). I have a 98 R and i have a trip computer (tbh i thought it was standard on all the P11 GT's). It shows ambient temperature, miles until you need to refuel, miles since last refuel, amount of time travelled, MPG, average speed and clock. Obviously you scroll through them using a little button on the end of the windscreen wiper stalk.

Also, again, i was under the impression that all GT's came std. with a 6 cd changer (i know mine did and everyone else i know had theres std as well)

Can't help you with options when new question.

MPG in town is around 24 for me and on the M'way is about 37-39.

In reply to the harsh ride comments, i have to say i disagree when using the original GT alloys with 195/15/60 tyres its a little bit harsh, but nothing major. However, since fitting the GTLE alloys with lower profile tyres, its become a lot harder ride.

Get over to www.npoc.co.uk and ask on the forums if you need more info on anything. The guys over there generally know everything to do with the primera.

atm i am getting a conbimed MPG of around 32mpg and that includes getting through town, siting in intense motorway traffic in 1st gear and then rolling home afterwards (28 mile round trip) including misc weekend short journeys.

things to check for; kocking from the front wheels - could be Top Links, can buy pattern parts from auction for like £20 a side to fix, easily sorted.

make sure it has been looked after, the engine likes to have its oil changed freqently.

check the usual things and i am sure that you would be fine.

edit; re the 6 changer.

the headunit lcd dies, and the whole thing doesnt work properly on mine. ive canned it and put in a Pioneer MP3 CD player when i bought the car, well worth it imo. who wants to faff with changing cd's in the boot anyway?

same here, got one of those headunits that reads of a hard-disk, far easier then faffing around with cd's in the changer.......
One thing i had with mine was the sunroof drain pipe became disconnected, so car got incredibly damp, this is a problem with all cars with sunroofs i suppose though....

Another note, if self-servicing you may need a special tool to get the oil filter out due to the placing of it, real **** to get to....i tried using a chain removal tool and couldn't do it, ended up with the bodge method of hammer and screwdriver as chain tool shifted it a bit so needed to get it off....dont cost much though. Also another thing to check is the air-con, becuase if it doens't work it could be because the system is leaking as apposed to just needing a recharge

Sorry to drag this thread back up but I was wondering if anyone could recommend some places for me to look for GTs. I've looked on autotrader and ebay but can't really think of anywhere else.

Thanks a lot.

Well I finally bought an S reg Primera GT today, the driveshafts haven't been changed and I can feel the abs come in at very slow speeds but I'm not that bothered as it was 800 quid with 103k on the clock and 12 months MOT. All the electrics are absolutely fine apart from the LCD on the radio which I'll probably change anyway.

Turned out the one I got was 2 miles from my house too which was a stroke of luck.

I'll try to get some pictures up once I've given it a good clean :)

btw the paint on the green ones that changes colour as it goes past is called Mecca flare, i know this as i know a lad that used to work in Nissan on the line when these were built.
