Vista 64-bit Gaming Compatibility

On vista 64 here. The only game i couldnt run was scarface (with latest patch). Might be a way to work around it but wasn't bothered enough to put the effort in :p was only going to have a quick blast through it. Half life 2 works fine, infact when i start HL2 or EP1,EP2 a Tab pops up saying "64bit mode active" or similar

Only problem I've got is Quakeworld locks up on map load if AF is enabled - probably an Nvidia driver issue. Worked fine on Vista 32bit.

Running great here so far. Have only tried COD4 and Supcom Forged Alliance so far though. Played plenty of COD4 though, about 10 hours total yesterday :o

PC is running much better as a whole than it was on XP. Was a dirty old install on a slower harddrive though, rather than a clean install on a Raid array :D

muahhaa, told you it was fine :D

+1 for vista 64 business here :)

for hl2 to be 64bit, delete everything, install steam off the website and download everything via the web. Orange box didnt install 64bit ness for me. Had to do it the way above. Check in your steam folder for a steam engine something 64.gcf (or whatever the file is) If it aint there, del and download it all :)

only vista 64bit problem i experienced was my linksys router, which is quite a big problem as you can image, they still don't have drivers out on the linksys site. won't be buying one of these again.

I installed my half life 2 holiday collection 2006 all from disc and i get 64bit ? Steam did update the games off the net but wasn't a big download

I've read all about HL2 so that's good to hear.

Hopefully I won't have drivers/program issues when I install though, especially with programs by smaller developers.

All my games, BF2/2142, CoD2/4 and all Steam stuff works just great. No Punkbuster issues on 64bit for me. Punkbuster ITSELF is an issue for some folks. Always best to go to evenbalance.com and manually update PB for each game.

The only thing that happens for me that never did on XP is that Wake Island on BF2 will crash BF2 back to desktop when I try to play it online.

I got Vista 64 yesterday. I have had massive problems with Gears of War, although I hear it's a badly done port so hopefully this will be the only game that doesn't work properly.

Thinking of going Vista 64 also as I had 4gb on Friday. Call me dim but with this os, do I need to download specific 64 bit patches to run games or will they run straight off? I mainly play Wow, Gw, TF2, UT3, HL2, CoH. Also what about office XP or will I have to buy the new office ?
Cheers..

Applications that aren't specifically coded for 64bit will generally just run in 32bit mode. Some games do release specific 64bit patches (Chronicles of Riddick and Far Cry come to mind), but a lot of newer games will just detect that you have a 64bit chip and work with it.

Office 97 upwards will work on vista (haven't tried anything earlier), don't touch Office 2007 even if it's free, the 2007 version of Word is the most hateful piece of software I've ever encountered.

I can't play Bloodrayne, but that's more to do with the fact that I have too much RAM installed.

In order to play that game you actually have to downgrade to 1GB of RAM or you confuse it.

Thanks for that chaps, dunno why I was just under the impression anything 32bit wouldn't run on 64bit. Office is a must have for me so i'm glad it will work. Will probably make the upgrade this week then.

No it's not - it just initially looks it. I use it all the time and it's fine it just takes a little getting used to - some of the extra functionality, especially in Outlook is very useful.

Go for it!
