ps3 sells a million in the uk, faster than the ps2.....and the 360

I hope for gamings sake that sony can keep it up. Competition is always a good thing.

They desperately need the PS3 to succeed.

The PS2 ended up being one of the most successful consoles in history with 120 million consoles sold to date. The PS3 doing better than the PS2 in its first year despite a relative lack of games and a high price point is sure to turn heads.

Yeah ended up, it was not such a massive seller from launch. The PS2 done terrible in its first year no?

This is just for the UK.

The PS3 is actually some way short of the PS2 with regards to sales in the first 52 weeks of launch..

Actually, scrap that. Extend the graph through to 62 weeks and it's pretty much neck and neck with the PS2. Not bad at all really.

Kinda shows you what idiots bought the thing at launch. :D
Actually, Microsoft have done themselves no favour with their unreliable consoles. To make things worse, they're even cashing in with 'cheap' features such as Wifi add-on and online subscription, making their xbox 360 the most expensive console out of all three, not forgetting the yearly subscription of online subscription.

I believe that was down to a similar situation Wii is seeing now, Not enough units.

I don't think the sales were as terrible as you are saying though, and I remember seeing the consoles going for stupid money on Ebay.

Infact I just found these figures.
980,000 sold units by March 5, 2000, one day after launch, in Japan

Surely that can't be bad :p

Infact I just found awhole section on PS2 history, may aswell post it :p

Only a few million people had obtained consoles by the end of 2000 due to manufacturing delays.[8] After its release, it was difficult to find PS2 units on retailer shelves.[9] Another option was purchasing the console online through auction websites such as eBay, where people paid over $1000 for a PS2.[10] The PS2 initially sold well partly on the basis of the strength of the PlayStation brand and the console's backward compatibility, selling over 980,000 units by March 5, 2000, one day after launch, in Japan.[11] This allowed the PS2 to tap the large install base established by the PlayStation — another major selling point over the competition. Later, Sony gained momentum with new development kits for game developers and more PS2 units for consumers.

Sounds like a good launch to me?

I am surprised its taken this long to be honest

I could have sworn I saw it had sold over 600K by May or something

Either way the fact its keeping up with the PS2 is a good thing - hopefully with the imminent release of GT5 (even if it is only Prologue) it should help console sales during March /April time

would like to see a few HUGE releases on BR also though to help it along

Whose disagreeing with that, what i'm saying is despite people not knowing about that at launch(reliability), despite people seeing what great games the 360 had at launch, the PS3 which had bugger all still out sold it at launch and to a million units.

Which shows the brand name is so strong they will buy anything.

Agreed.

I just couldn't help myself thinking that Microsoft would have done a lot better in the market, had it not for the reliability of 360 and the excessive noise of drive/fan!

From what I have seen in this forum, some people have gone for PS3 because of these problems which Microsoft haven't ironed out for more than 2 years.

Hopefully Microsofts next console will be very quiet, ultra reliable and have free internet connection as well as a hard drive as standard. I would definately consider one then.

I'm still surprised they diodn't fit the 360 with a HDD as standard, it really does seem stupid.

I'm not too fussed about wireless but for the actual cost of adding wireless to the machine they should have done it. I'm not talking about the cost of their overpriced adapter, just the cost of adding wireless functionality.

especially when you consider that it was standard in the Xbox - seems like a backwards move to me.

Having wireless in the box really doesn't bother me. If I had to buy an adapter then so be it - same with the headset and rechargable batteries too. It's paying for LIVE which I don't understand as it alienates people who want to use it but infrequently.

Well Silver is free, and if you only used it now and again there is 48 hour free codes very easy to come by.

Yeah but I shouldn't have to go searching for a free code to put in on the odd occasion when I feel like having an online game. I appreciate that LIVE is a great service, but if MS had offered this great service as part of the package for free then it would have gone a long way to securing more customers.

They want to become a major factor in the console market and then charge for everything as an addition- seems like flawed logic to me.

Most games come with the trial, not sure what is hard about having to store it until you want to use it, takes 2 mins to enter the code, not a massive hardship is it, considering the time you spent posting that could have got you online :) Just like twiddling your thumbs for 20mins while your PS3 installs a game is probably not much of an issue to you?

How will you feel when Home appears with it being littered with microtransactions, will you demand Sony give you a new T-Shirt for your virtual world for free to be nice....LOL

Never mind... I would rather smash my head repeatedly against the wall than get into a console debate with you.
