You forgot the bit where they took his dna and kept him in a cell overnight. Bang out of order for somebody who was simply listening to an mp3 player. This isn't 1984 mate, don't even try to advocate or justify such an extreme course of action.

If anyone should get a criminal record it should be that blind ass caller that said that guy had a gun.
I can understand them keeping his DNA, but haveing the criminal record saying he's been nicked for firearms.
If he has to apply for a job in future and he writes about this on his application, got a feeling he won't be employed.

except in this day and age a criminal is FAR more likely to have his fingerprints and dna taken. A murder is commited, they run the names of everyone that lives near and works with say, this woman, and your name pops up, they might not read the record even, just that yours was the only hit automatically, and wrongly would make this guy a suspect. The very fact your details are in there automatically makes people look at you as a suspect. where theres smoke theres fire kinda thing. especially as if they looked into it there would be mention of arrest for possible having a gun in public. AS details DO get leaked, even sold off to people. imagine you don't get a job in the future because someone mistakenly arrested you, took your dna/fingerprints, made a very very vague report not obviously saying you are cleared and someone finds the data checks it, your name pops up and bam, they write you off as a bad person.
Ultimately no, it SHOULDN'T make a bit of difference, but it does and it will probably at some point so yes they should erase the data, they SHOULDN'T have taken it in the first place, they shouldn't have treated him like a criminal from the second they didn't find a gun ON HIM. fine chuck him in a car, look around, realise its a windup/idiot tipster and let him go with an apology. The time to take someone in and take his prints and a dna sample VS no proof, and nothing to indicate anything had happened its silly to start the procedure. when and if the guys searching found a gun take prints then, there was no need to rush him through the "system" and no need to really take him in.
Either ALL of our details go in the system, with some kind of anti fraud + special dna unit setup to help try to mitigate anyone being falsely accused, or only convicted/charged people should go in the system with anyone being cleared having the details destroyed.
I don't recall reading that he was kept in a cell overnight. Regards the DNA i'm sure it's standard practice when you're investigating someone who you suspect has been in possession of a gun.
Yes the treatment was over the top for someone who was just listening to an mp3 player. But this was not what he was being held for!!! Until they knew otherwise they have to act as though the guy had a gun, this was all the evidence they had to go on! They have to act in a way that protects both their lives and those of the publics. Would you have seriously expected the police to act in any other way?

Well you see part of the police's job is to investigate people suspected of committing a crime. When crimes are committed the police will collect evidence from the scene, this evidence can include fingerprints and dna. Now when the police are investigating someone for suspicion of carrying a gun they might think it's a good idea to see if said persons fingerprints/dna match anything found at the scene of any crimes. If there is a match then the police can use this evidence as a clue and they can start building a case against the suspect. Also you say there was no reason to take him in/nothing to indicate that he had done anything, what exactly would you call the 999 call describing someone carrying a gun in public?!?!
Another thing to think about, what if next week someone on that street finds a gun in their garden, the police show up and fingerprint it. They would quickly know if there was anything to tie it to this man.

I am going to personally blow up the PNC myself (perhaps not gchq 
), including all the other sensitive government computers. Down with BIG BROTHER!
I can't say where they are for security reasons, however quite a few people know where they are I would guess. What I will say is, for all the security... they hold the servers bellow the water level of a certain estuary. LOL get the sand bags out!
I'm still waiting for the 'big' flood..
