PC Gaming Is Dead!

There is NO point... Discussing it is annoying because sooner or later it will end up in a flame war.

Tis Boring :o

The POINT is, one of the major PC game developers is saying he'd rather concentrate on creating AAA console titles. And that he believes that PC gaming is going to decline into casual web based titles.

And how can this turn into a flame war? If you don't believe there's a point to discuss here, then it's simple, don't post.

It actually is worth debating, maturely (good luck with that), one of the big names working for the developers who helped make PC gaming, in fact all gaming, what it is today has said that he feels PC gaming is dead.

This is a bold statement, is he saying it because he's annoyed at the UT3 sales flop or because he has some basis? Discuss!

Thank you. :)

Because we see these damn type of threads every damn year , when will you get it through your skulls that it will either DIE or NOT die and there isn't anything you can do about it but continue playing or don't play what comes out...

Pc gaming was supposed to die in 2004!

He aint saying its dead, just that its in disarray, which ...... it is. Personally i think this is a topic worth discussing, sure its not dieng, but things arnt going its way.

Isn't 'PC gaming is dead' announced with every new generation of consoles?

Bingo

http://www.mobygames.com/featured_article/feature,11/

Over the last couple of years, many pundits and supporters alike have called the PC game industry dead. Even publications like PC Gamer have started to talk more and more about console platforms like the upcoming Microsoft X-Box.

See , nothing more to debate i'll be seeing people in 2010 saying pc gaming is dieing :D:D

He aint saying its dead

Well according to what i just read with a 2sec search it was in a disarray in the early 2000's

PC GAMING IS DEAD!

That's right folks, send those GTs back, you'll have no use for them soon. CliffyB thinks the PC is going casual with web based games and more titles like The Sims [Source]. And he wants to concentrate on AAA titles for consoles.
This isn’t the first time articles like this have shown up recently (disappointing most of the time its coming from 1UP, who seem to be very anti-PC recently).

What do you guys think? Is PC gaming a thing of the past or is CliffyB just annoyed because they’ve lost touch with the market that made them as big as they?

As far as ive read ut3 isn't doing much at sales so maybe from epics pov. =/

I think the problem now is that the reqs for most games is a lot higher than the majority of PC gamer's PCs so people who want to UT3 or Crysis etc can't.

Its not alive and kicking, but its certainly not dead.

It needs a push forward, but i don't know if its just me but i've lost my faith in consoles as well. Nothing brings me back to it.

They have realised that PC gamers won't make do with second rate titles and simply won't buy crap just because it has a well known name on it. Basically they are bitching because they didn't make as much money as they wanted. I'll leave Epic and "CliffyB" to throw their toys out of the pram while I continue to enjoy quality games on my PC, thanks. :)

pc gaming goes through lulls anytime consoles are released and the first couple of years of their life, in the next year, stuff coming out on pc will start to blow the consoles away again and the cycle continues.

What if developers start to focus more on console gaming though (360/PS3/Wii) and we get more and more shoddy ports? We’ve already seen Epic make Gears of War from the ground up for the 360, and then port it over to the PC. That would have been unheard of a few years back for Epic to do something like that. Even Oblivion was made for the 360 and ported over, and when that game was released you could really tell. It took quite a few mods to make that game playable.

With the rise of Xbox Live as well, more and more gamers are playing online, and even though PC gaming online is still far ahead of anything on consoles, the majority of gamers won’t care. They’ll play game on the platform their friends are playing on. Even I’m guilty of that, I traded in my PC CoD4 CE for the 360 version, because that’s where all my friends where playing.

I personally don’t think PC gaming is dead and I hope it never is. But we’re seeing more and more gaming sites focus mainly on console releases, and even if the PC version is far superior the console game will still get the coverage.

Even if this has been brought up before, I don't see why we can't discuss it. If anything it's going to get worse over the next few years as consoles turn more and more into PCs.

PC emulates all consoles upto ps2 and I don't care if that's legal or not, it rules...
Console will never win me over to their side as they can't make good enough strategy games and that's my faf genre.

Don't make me laugh, is that why every sales chart has the Sims occupying most of the positions?

Epic are just lazy and upset that both GOW & UT3 for PC sucked so the sales were poor. Good ridance let them make their console only same old gamplay & graphical look for the masses and abandon the platform which made them in the first place!

Crysis gameplay sucked bigtime but according to EA it has still gone platinum (over 1 million sales) and rising.

UE3 engine does even not properly support AA on PC's and contains lots of other stupid bugs like 1360x768 is unsupported on some UE3 titles yet works perfectly on others. WTF this is one of the most popular resolutions right now due to people using 720P HDTV's for PC gaming.

The PC is lagging behind the PS3 + 360 in game sales but still offers advantages as no fees to pay to either Sony or MS and still a full generation ahead of console gfx.

Its unlikely any console will get released in the next 5 years which is going to be able to handle 1080P with full AA as that hardware is just too expensive and MS/Sony will want a few more years to maximise profits from this generation. Yet the PC can already do this and will become the only way to have smooth FPS on 1080P until then (important as HDTV's are obviously the way forward for gaming and the vsync/low quality textures of the 360/PS3 are very apparent @ 720P already which is why a lot of titles are being rendered at a lower rez then upscaled to fill the 720P).

 How many more of these *PC GAMING IS DEAD!* threads are we going to have to suffer  PC Gaming is alive and well, no thanks to this thread.....

I dont think 900 million in sales is a dying, even if the 15% of total game sales is down from previous years. Also this doesnt count sales from online suppliers like steam (from who I bought all my games last year) and also subscriptions to the likes of wow. More importantly it doesnt count the orange box and I dont no many people online who didnt buy that.

tbh this looks like a case of someone selling the same idea for 8 years and wondering why it didnt sell and Im actually canny pleased about that as the constant recycling of game ideas is the only this that will kill PC games. As for the lack of release sales that some games suffered (for instance crisis) compaired to what they were predicted, a good PC game will sell for years after release where as console games tend to die much quicker.

The only thing that worrys me is microsoft pushing for more console ports to increase the sale of xbox games.

PC gaming is obviouslly in decline, and will eventually fade out as the publishers of the games will just stop releasing them on pc platorm as they wont be making enough cash from them. Although people say online gaming will always be the reason that it wont die, i think in the future consoles will focus more of their attention to grabbing the market from the PC, which they will inevitably do.

Aint owned a console myself since the SEGA master System:o
So will be a shame to see the death of PC games.

UT2004 owns UT3 big time.

PC gaming aint dead, I'm sure crysis stirred PC gaming up quite abit and got some people out buying uber rigs to play it lol. The only way PC gaming will die is if all games can run silky smooth on a console at high res with 8xAA and as good graphics as the PC can do it, and also a decent mouse and keyboard for the consoles, not to mention an operating system on aswell, proberbly windows XP, plenty of USB ports and the ability to overclock the consoles hardware.
