Am I an alcoholic?

One of my mates said i'm turning into an alcoholic, I don't get drunk everyday, maybe once, twice, three times a week. Depending on how many times I go out with mates, drink in the evenings (if i'm in or down the pub but 3-4 slow ones), wine with my meal, liquid lunch sometimes.
I don't drink due to any kind of problems, I love life, I just enjoy it, would you consider me an alcoholic though?

Some people drink alcohol every day and I wouldn't say they are an alcohol. Surely to be an alcoholic you have to be addicted/craving the stuff? If you can get away without drinking for almost half the week then I don't think you are :)

Do you mean you get drunk 3 times a week but drink 3-4 pints every night with some liquid lunches in there too?

4 questions:

Have you ever thought about cutting down?
Does it annoy you when people (your mate) said you're turning into an alcoholic?
Do you feel guilty about it at all?
Do you feel like you need a drop in the morning to start the day?

Good questions.

Also do you find that you try and plan out when you can next have a drink, and do you find yourself planning things so you can have a drink (i.e. an excuse to go to the pub for lunch etc)

No

More makes me wonder who thinks i'm an alcoholic.

Do you feel guilty about it at all?
No, I mean if I come home and wake the missus up then I feel guilty but she usually comes out anyway.

Do you feel like you need a drop in the morning to start the day?
Only if i'm on holiday, because it reminds me of my student days.

If I had to give up alcohol for a reason, medical reasons or something, I probably wouldn't want to, but I reckon I could quite easily.
I don't plan to go drinking, if I go out its for social reasons go out, have a few or a lot with your mates kind of thing, liquid lunch is usually with a mate at work.

I go out about twice a week to get pretty drunk, and then might meet up with a mate for a quickie whenever we just want to hang out somewhere.

That said, if I didn't go to the pub it really wouldn't bother me and I don't feel like I've missed out on anything.

The major question is whether you've become dependant on alcohol or not and whether or not you need to have a drink or just want to have one.

When you haven't been drinking do you shake?

If no then your not medically an alcoholic, yet

*note this is very generally but would be a decent indicator of the state of you nervous system*

Who cares if you are alcoholic? You earn close to £130k p.a., so put a bit aside and save up for that new liver when you need it.

To be honest if you are at the stage where you get the shakes after not drinking then that's pretty far down the line.

I'm going to take that as a 'no' for all 4 questions, although I could have been clearer with the questions I guess. The questions I asked are standardised screening questions for alcohol dependence. A 'yes' to any of them and you should think about seeking further advice really.

He does

Anywho being completely alcoholic is risky say for instance he gets stuck somewhere he can't drink, he then risks dying from withdrawal.

Isn't this a medical advice thread? Go and see a GP about your drinking and find out for sure if you have a problem. I would guess you're drinking more than the recommended daily allowance for men at least.
