Toshiba calling it quits on HD-DVD

All I need to do now is wait for a 2.0 compat standalone. I'll keep my existing Tosh hd-e1 for playing top stuffs like Heroes, which has bags of extra content.

I think Toshiba deserves some praise for not dragging this war out as it would have hurt the consumer & the market considerably.

Now its time to develop the HD market properly :D

What makes my laugh is all the HD-DVD fan boys that post silly comments and clearly can't take defeat gracefully.

Not quoting anyone here directly but I’m sure you can find some examples somewhere on the net…

You can find just as many blu-ray fanboys taking victory ungracefully. It's like with the whole PS3 Vs 360... these going to be fanboys on both sides who act like complete idiots.

Is there anyone out there who is like myself and just doesn't really care? I'll buy my movies on whatever format I like, I have both HD-DVD and Blu-Ray, and am really neither up nor down about this "war".

(Yes I am aware the war is now over)

I'm a bit of a hypocrite - I wanted Blu-ray to win. Why, I don't know because I'll probably only buy a few discs like Alien/Aliens, Star Wars, LotR throughout the entire format's lifetime!

I haven't got a 1080p TV nor a 5.1 speaker set up so there is no real advantage over DVD for me.

Yeah me neither. I was just waiting for it to be over. Not a chance of me buying one until there was only one option. Now i'll either get when if I get a PS3 or if theres a solo add-on for my 360.

If MS release a 360 with a built in BD drive it will surely push the price up?

I forsee allot of current owners trading their system in if this comes to pass

The 360 will probably see a Blu-ray add-on but they will not build the drive into the console until the next Xbox, which is only about 2 years away now.

"So I work at Best Buy part time in Media (movies, music and games) and had the pleasure of telling customers in the Blu-ray/HD DVD aisle about Warner Bros going Blu. I almost felt bad for some HD DVD guys who received HD DVD players for Christmas. The disappointment was priceless. Some pro-Blu customers didn't know and loved hearing it since it put more faith into the hardware they already had be it a PS3 or a standalone. I got to tell a potential Toshiba HD DVD standalone buyer about the PS3 and Warner Bros choice and easily swayed him away from buying it. Once he heard about the wireless streaming capabilities he could do from his desktop to his PS3 he was sold. Customers really love hearing about that. "

oh dear

Isn't it long since due a price drop anyway? they could just keep the price the same and include a BD-ROM.

I don't think an external drive would have the same impact as an internal one, PS3 sales are expected to rocket following this and nobody (as in your everyday Joe) is going to buy a 360 with an external drive over a PS3 if high-definition playback is an important factor.

It's official now.

It'll be strange to see the next Xbox with a blu-ray drive. But cool regardless, it's what we all need, a high definition standard that everyone adheres to. Sony has already said they have no problems with MS using blu-ray in their products and consoles the future.

Of course they have no problem, that's 15-20 million extra drives sold.

Touche but you would considering it's a bluray forum so it's going to be full of bluray fan boys.

Wonder what the mood is on HD-DVD forums? Probably doing the exact same and posting similar "intelligent" comments...

While i'm happy that the format war is over this soon, i'm still a bit skeptical towards bluray, mostly because of the whole "the format isn't ready" thing where some players aren't compatible with 2.0 bluray standards, also i've just had a more enjoyable experience with HD dvd, mostly due to excellent conversion of many films and the price (using the LG hybrid drive).
I wonder if I can now go and snatch up HD dvd films for a fraction of the price, and whether or not the films that are on HD will be released on Bluray.
Who here will throw out their HD dvd players and films, I'm going to keep mine and have something neat to show to my children!
I'm a bit annoyed though, since I spent 3 months deciding on which format to invest in (bought a 360HD drive), then when bluray seemed to sell more got my hybrid drive.

I guess they might be gutted that their HD-DVD drive is only useful for playing SD-DVD's in the future.

I would also be a little annoyed if Blu Ray would have lost as I have a PS3.

I am just glad that there is a 'winner' now and that the prices can come down.

Yeah, although I have a hd-dvd drive I'm glad it's over too. What is annoying about this whole episode is that they was a opportunity for both Sony and Toshiba to combine to make a single format but a level of arrogance from both sides meant this didn't happen.
