New car uses more fuel in the beginning?

This friday I picked up my new Focus 1.8 Flexifuel but the average fuel consumption for the first 300km is 23mpg when my old Focus 1.6 did 33mpg average.

Now I know the new car has a bigger engine and is heavier but the difference seems is bit higher than I expected.

Bigger engine and the car is heavier? You will generally lose mpg.

ECU wouldn't take 300km to learn that, infact I think you make that up? :D

A brand new engine will consume *slightly* more fuel as it is run-in (in general).

My CTR was averaging 25-27mpg, now its 29-31mpg (500 miles later)

That is just what I was thinking.

I will check again after driving a few more tanks of fuel.

You have got to be joking?
I would cry if I had a 1.8 doing 23 MPG, I can squeeze 22MPG out of my XJR :D
I did the conversion again as the car displays the consumption in Liters/100KM's and I was a little off and it is ~25mpg with all 50mph roads with no motorway miles.

So maybe I was a little too soon in comparing fuel consumption, I will check again after I have done a 1000 miles or so.

@ 50MPH in 5th is where your car should be most economical. My 2.5 X-type gets 36 MPG @ that point, would have thought yours would be around the same??

Definate improvement after running in with modern engines, getting 7mpg more now after 2500 miles in my semi auto Panda ( 55mpg) most onboard mpg computers seem to be 2-3mpg out so you might be getting even less than you thought

I said 50mph but I meant more of town and B-roads with a lot of traffic lights so lots of stopping, accelerating, stopping etc.

I think the fuel consumption might indeed be off but that in reality the consumption is better, the manual fuel indicator is ~50% with 300KM so that would mean with a 54 liter tank the consumption is ~31mpg

I find, driving the mixed fleet of 3 year old or less trucks at work, that the newer ones return considerably poorer consumption than one thats already done a couple of 100,000 km, the difference is usually about 1.5mpg (which in an HGV is a lot!)
