Whilst I agree that 4 years is a little long, I do think that our drugs laws do need to be more strict and punishment more severe, but with prisions, how they are, I can't see that being feasible.

He shouldn't have gone there in the first place if stuff he wants to do gets him "fed to the lions". I like smoking so I can see that going to the UAE is a very bad idea. How is he any different? He was actually dumb enough to try take some over.

It's a harsh punishment but it's not exactly a secret law, and unlike other crimes/punishments that have been cited as comparisons it is completely within an individual's control to adhere to it.
If there was a punishment of imprisonment in a country for not wearing a hat then I'd think it a ridiculous law, but if I went there I'd make damn sure I wore a hat.

Thats what I meant from the start, I just hadn't explained fully.
There is indeed but it's on a sliding scale. You were implying the laws of other countries were non of our business. Well when those laws are unjust I think we have good right to make them our business.
Why is it wrong for me to believe that he broke the law and deserves punishment but at the same time that 4 years in a foreign prison is unjust?

No really... it is. This is just as horrible as many of the drug sentences the US dishes out quite regularly.
Two grams of pot is an absolutely tiny amount and locking someone up for four years is totally wrong regardless of where it happens. It's a waste of everyone's time, most sadly, poor ole' Grooverider.
