I was thinking about this, this morning when watching the news about British Gas making record profits this year, not got a massive problem with it but I feel sorry for all the pensioners and the like who struggle to afford heating. Therefore if I could change 5 things about the UK it would be:

1. Firstly stop letting immigrants in (not against immigrants) because there are more important issues with the people who live in the UK to sort out before we start helping out others.

2. Give pensioners subsidised essential services. I don't know if this is done already but at least help these people afford a decent standard of living. They deserve it.

3. Bring back national service. Contraversial I know but I feel it would give people a sense of value and help cut "yob culture" in the UK. I personally wouldn't have a problem with it.

4. Judicial system, I believe there is no level playing field within our judicial system and it needs to be harsher for crimes like rape, etc

5. Education I understand that different people get different things out of their education but better help and guidance I believe is needed to help people who are not particularly academic based into something which would suit them, e.g. Apprentices and trades

Not all I would like to change about the UK but I really think the government needs to stop bickering with one another and really take a look at what the UK is becoming and how to fix current issues and not make new ones.

Your thoughts?

Invent a Robocop to clear the streets of burberry and anything chav.

Shut the gates on immigration (after working 3 years in the same job i was told to leave company because I couldn't speak polish! therefor couldnt communicate with workers)

Turn all the yobs into killing machines with a brain of a yob.... not sure I agree with that one.

I see your point however I think with national service "generally" you would instill a sense of morality and some good old fashioned common sense into them.

Well the content in this thread wasn't ridiculously predictable :p And the pensioners thing is already done in loads of areas...

1. National Service. I think it's a great idea. It gives people some discipline, learning, team building and develops skills and strengthens personalities.

2. The weather - I know I can't REALLY change it, but if I could get nice weather that would be great!

3. Less tax on fuel.

4. Invest in decent nuclear power facilities.

5. Less bureaucratism and a more proactive civil/social sector.

1) Halt Immigration, reverse it for unskilled migrants.
2) Stop trying to force Integration and stop "embracing" multi-culturalism. 2000 years of history suggests it will never work.
3) Stop Intolerances, mainly religious (e.g. Mohammed pictures in wiki thread)
4) Stop targets, especially racial.
5) Enforce English (and Welsh/Scottish Gaelic for our cousins to a much lesser degree) as the only legal language in this country. It costs probably millions to translate all Governemnt docs into different languages, why?

I think the weather one, sunny in summer, snow in winter and cheaper fuel is a good one.
And also for eveyone to get along, and not try to point to discrimination in every conflict.

Create a system of lawmaking where any laws passed restricting the public have to pass a test of proven reduction in social harm that could not be provided by less restrictive legislation.

Create a punishment system utilising the above, where exploiting or abusing the freedoms allowed results in tangible punishment.

Reform immigration to encourage economically beneficial immigrants while keeping out those who provide no benefit to the country, including economic solvency and education criteria.

Dramatically reform the welfare state, eliminating dependancy and encouraging self-sufficiency where possible, and ensuring that those who genuinely can't work are supported better than they are now.

Minimise the size of government, the functions is currently does and the desire to both be subservient to public opinion while manipulating it at the same time.

That would do me.

Firstly reform the church, starting with the following:
Public execution for Rowan Williams
Let them know their place! They are not meant to be 'PC', they are not meant to even be the 'P' at all!

Have an oral citizenship test in the Queens English. Sure anyone can learn English, but if I cannot understand what the hell they are saying what was the point?

Harsher jail time, except for certain lesser crimes where a quick flogging should do the trick. For heinous crimes not only serious time, flogging and branding, but set up a penal colony in the Australian outback to send them for 'rehabilitation'.

Tell the EU to **** off! While getting rid of all things assocated with them.

Make the Isle of Wight a convict island, very similar to Escape from New York style where they just get dumped there and have to fend for themselves. That will make them think twice before commiting a crime.

Same really....

- Sort out immigration. I'm tried of the fact that it doesn't matter where you go in the UK now, you walk into a shop/bar/restaurant and the person isn't British. The country is getting over-stretched and loosing its identity.

- Stiffer sentences for criminals... there just isn't enough deterrent. If prison space is the issue, why not build a super prison somewhere? It will open up jobs and you could even have a private company build and operate it.

- Benefits system - Needs and overhaul when you have people getting houses and money for doing nothing and never even attempting to work when they are perfectly capable of it.

- Housing market - I've just turned 26 and would really like to move out of my parents, but just can't afford to :(

- PC/Health and safety red tape that is country now seems to be dominated by with everything. **** happens, thats part of life.

1. Nuclear power, screw all this wind farm malarkey. Just not cost effective.
2. National service
3. Massive reform of the benefits system
4. Less tax and bureaucracy
5. Electoral reform
