Hello all,

Was just out doing a bit of work today and as a result I've been asked to perform a "clean up" operation on several computers in a small local business. The job I was at earlier today was installing several CAT5 wires to allow for broadband to be used on the aforementioned computers. For this task I charged €50 and spent about 2 hours doing it. Now the person felt that I really should be asking for more but was quite happy to pay the money.

While I asked for what the owner felt to be below the odds money I knew there was a probability that I'd get future work from her and that gamble paid off I intend not to undervalue any further services I may provide.

As stated previously, the task is to perform a general clean-up on five computers and I was wondering what people here charge/pay for similar circumstances as this is my first time dealing with anything like this and I've no idea what prices to set?

Thanks in advance,
Antar Bolaeisk

100% serious mate. I know a guy that charges £35 per virus he removes

I work for T-Mobile UK doing a corporate IT helpdesk role, but I also do jobs in the evening and weekends doing general computer work. i.e. upgrades, repairs, installing networks (wired and wireless), removing viruses and spyware and anything else i'm asked to do with computers.

I know a guy charges 85 an hour + vat on a minimum 3 hour call and apparantly he's pretty reasonable. Do what the guy says above or maybe call a couple of bods make an average and knock a few % off the top.

I charge an initial £50 and £25 per hour there after.

Almost exactly what I'd charge (not that I do it anymore). I use to charge £40 + £20/hour afterwards. That was 3 years ago though.

Although it's 5 computers the chances are you can work on more than one at a time as they delete/defrag/cclean/windows updates :p So it's unlikely to take you all evening.

Externally I am charged out at £400 a day. Needless to say I don't see that amount my self, but that is my external charge rate.

£35 an hour on site between 9-5pm. After hours is £70 an hour. Minimum of one hour plus 90p metre of Cat5. All prices plus VAT.

If you think this is unreasonable check out my monthly expenses plus wage bill, it's frightening.

i do PC repairs outside of work and find i'd rather charge little and often instead of a lot and not so often. obiously i dont rip myself off. but my clients keep coming back and also recoomend me to friends.

i agree u can charge £50+ an hour but if u charge, say £20 an hour are they not more likey to come back?

When I work freelance, I charge £75 for the first hour and £50 for each hour after that.

And the people I work for are more than happy to pay that for my services - software engineer, not the same but you should defo be charging more.
