Only had them like 3 months and they clock like a dream, but I was thinking perhaps one 3870X2 would be better.

Good idea or not?

Well you would probably see savings on your electricity bill but I think you would only be seeing negligable performance gains for all the hassle. Another factor is how much you can get for the 2900pro's

I'd hope to get £120 to £150 for the cards each and around £35 to £40 for the blocks. Will see what happens on the famous autction site.

You'll be lucky to get that much for each of the cards.. HD2900XTs only for for around £100 on there!

Ohwell, we'll see.

I guess at 3870X2 has gotta be better in the long run. Means I can always add more further down the line!

If they clock like a dream, then surely you have them well past 2900 XT speeds (which the 2900 pros are, XT's just downclocked), in which case the X2 would be a downgrade id have thought, as thats all the X2 is, 2x 2900 XT's on the same board.

EDIT: Sorry, they renamed the 2900 XT's 3870's, all this crap where they keep releasing the exact same cards under different names is getting me well confused now, even Nvidia's getting in on that act now by changing the first 8 to a 9 on their old 8800 series, so they will be called 9800's now instead.

Yes they run between 800 & 858. However saying the X2 is 2 x 2900XT's isn't true.

It's close enough. I think the only difference performance wise is that the 3870 is DX 10.1 and runs a bit cooler which means greater overclocking ability.

Well I've already sold one to a mate for £120, so I'll be ordering a 3870X2 this evening me thinks.

Only shame is I got a serious amount of water to drain now:(

I'd have kept them personally, you won't see hardly any difference, infact it'll prolly be slower due to 256bit bus and only 512MB/card...

Can't see how it will be slower, irrespective of your comments??

Also it will give me the option to add another X2 in a couple of months time.

i dont consider it bad, thats why i said, if you can get the money you consider to be good then do it. X2 is the overally better product.

And assuming you dont mind a degrade in performance for a while, you could buya cheap 3870XT and wait for next gen to arrive
