Are you scared by the thought of Nuclear War?

Wrong attitude, I'm afraid.

The more technology progresses, the more likely smaller countries are to be able to build their own nukes.

As such, the main deterrent is having our own. It won't deter utter lunatics who don't care about their own lives or the lives of their citizens, but it stopped the Russians and Americans from launching during the Cold War and it's working at the moment pretty well too.

What would we do if the CND got rid of all our nukes, then someone threw one at us? Just sit and cry?

We're at that delicate stage in Civilisation in between getting the Bomb and developing the missile shield that protects you from it.

I agree to an extent, but one nutter with one is *better* (for want of a smarter word) than everyone throwing them around the planet.

Plus there isn't a movement for hurry up and build the defense system :p

But we're not really "throwing them around", are we?

There's been some nuclear testing, a couple of power plant accidents, and 2 bombs to end the Second World War.

That's it.

I don't understand everyone saying threads made them depressed and scared!

I watched it and it just bored me to death, wasn't even worrying in the slightest. I think I'm off to watch it again just to make sure I didn't miss the point first time around.

I'm in switzerland atm and by law every accommodation (normal houses/flats and hotels etc) has to have a nuclear shelter. It's a bit odd - you've probably seen the film about the tunnel which has a jail in case people have to form a temporary society in there during nuclear war! Also is very odd as who the hell is going to bomb switzerland?

Definitely feel a lot safer here than in london though. I just think that if a nuclear war happens then we're all ****** anyway.

i think theres gonna be a major war in my life time. dunno about nuclear i know i cant stop it if it happens it happens and ill move to a very remote part of europe live off the land and keep my head down. or at least thats the plan

Not particularly worried about it, in fact it barely crosses my conciousness most of the time. There isn't much I can do about it and as has been said if it happens there isn't going to be any point in worrying about it then either.

people often toss around the thought of us going at war with Iran, and that getting bigger countries involved. But really, I think it will be more like those eastern countries fighting each other. Who knows.

The fallout will likely cover the entire planet, so you wont be safe anywhere.

I am more concerned about destroying such a beautiful planet than humans.

One of my favourite subjects :) along with anything post apocalyptic

Watch Threads, The Day After, Jericho By Dawn's Early Light, and then pandemics like the excellent Survivors (Which is being remade:D).

I've also been to several bunkers like ROC posts, and Kelvedon Hatch http://www.secretnuclearbunker.com/

Sorry OP but you made me smile with your worries, good job you state dob as 1983, if you had been 18 in 83 like myself and a few othger posters on here you probably wouldnt have made it through.

Seriously while we now have the new threat of the terrorist bomb, as a previous poster wrote the 60's and 70's where cold war time. They really did have "what to do if we get nuked" public information films.

When I was 15/16 we did a play in English at school which was all about a school trip to a goverment/ military bunker, basic story was all the alarms go off, kids and teacher are locked in a room but can hear internal communications and gradually realsie that a nuclear war has started and they are sitting in a bunker while the world burns. We then went on to discuss the various reactions of the characters, cracking up, denial, realisation that everyone else in the bunker was over 30, or that the girls where the only females of child bearing age etc...

Think you might have struggled...

However I am on record as saying in front of freinds that I fully expect to see a terrorist nuke in my lifetime, and I said it in 1991...

In all honesty, im more scared about being stabbed/shot in the street than nuclear war, since this occurs thousands (Perhaps millions?) of times more than a nuclear attack ;)
