Best Miles Per Gallon Cars ?

no point in modern diesel tbh unless you drive them like a saint on the motorway

my passat hire car does about 25mpg round town and about 16 if i rag it.

my old remapped focus tdci actually could do 50 mpg round town but it was no fun driving like that, and soon as i ragged it, it dropped to 30 mpg

my dad had a fiesta 1.4 tdci that did about 40 mpg town driving (amazing how its worse then a 1.8!!)

If you want some recommendations, we really need to know what you'll be using the car for, estimated mileage etc.

A small diesel city car, such as the C1, with 55BHP, is not going to fun on a long journey, or any journey come to think of it.

Edit: I've just seen your estimated mileage. Don't buy a Citroen C1 1.4 HDi. Don't even consider it.

Well commuting in town's and long motorway runs maybe once a week or fortnight around the 240 miles there and back.

Any reason not to consider the citroen ? i've heard they not reliable is that why your saying not to consider one ?

Here ya go:

2200 * 32/45 != 1700

You do realise diesel costs more to buy than petrol yes

15,000 miles @ 32mpg @ 103.9 = £2211 (Which I rounded down)
15,000 miles @ 45mpg @ 110.9 = £1678 (Which I rounded to 1700)

To bring the thread a little more on topic, the Renault Clio DCi would be a good car to go for. Nice inside, pretty reliable (through friends who own such a car), pretty well screwed together, not ridiculously slow, and will achieve a "real world" average per tank of 60mpg or thereabouts. A friend of mine would average well over 600 miles out of a ~£45 tankful of diesel on her Clio. Which isn't bad at all.

This one, a 53 plate with 61,000 miles is going for about £4.5k.

I'd much rather have a car I enjoy driving than sitting in a diesel powered shoe box staring at the mpg display.

Plus you'll probably end up spending most of your fuel savings on a buying an equivalent spec to the petrol version.

If your really bothered about it, buy an old diesel and run it of veg oil.

If you are only getting 32mpg out of a Focus dont expect miracle economy from a diesel over the same types of journey. £1k a year saving on 15k a year? No way.

£2200 for your Focus fuel, diesel @ 45mpg = £1700..

Looking back at the figures, I was working on 20k miles per annum, so I take back my original statement of nearly 1k for 15k a year and replace it with over 1k for 20k a year.

Bear in mind I have the 2.0L Focus, which even driving delicately on the motorway will be lucky to average more than 35mpg.
Journey is 40% motorway, 40% commute to work (30 zones and b roads mainly) and 20% of a bit of everything.

I used book figure of 32mpg for my car (which is exactly what I get), and book figure of 51mpg for the 1.8 diesel new focus. This gave a saving of £780 (for 15k miles) based on my local petrol station.

I can get 40MPG from my 111R if I'm careful... I do about 6-9k miles per year so it would almost certainly be a false economy for me to buy anything else. Not that I would want to anyway!

If you want an economical motorway cruiser then just get a Golf TDI... not brand new though or anywhere near new.

gotta agree about the old rotary pump golfs they're amazing on fuel, 90 or 110 bhp are older engines, the best ones.

If you wait a year a VW dealer will get you a nice "mint" Golf TDI 130 without any optional extras for £8.5k. What a steal!

dude seriously buy a 3k focus 1.6

5k to 12k is a very strange budget is this on hp?

Well i should have just said under 12k i guess, im not quite sure why i put 5k, im definately looking to get something as cheap as possible so 3k would be great if the MPG is great to.

Is it possible to get something which has atleast 60MPG for around 3k ?

The Toyota Aygo petrol supposeidly can do 61MPG but im guessing it would be 50-55 in real world conditions, Toyota are pretty reliable to ?

Last time I knew diesel prices around here it was 105 pence I think, say week or two ago, petrol is or was around 99 pence but its going up and down to 105 pence.

Im starting to think i should have set a lower budget maybe sub 6k (this is all new to me if im honest so probably making a right idiot of my self hehe), I would only buy new if I could get a cracking deal I must say, I would likely be paying cash to if possible.

I am starting to see what you guys mean with value of car over how long it takes to make the savings back though, I did'nt think of it that way really. would still prefer to get something with great MPG as I guess if i wanted to then sell the car on i would then see the savings come back to me in some form.

It's all a con, a Polo bluemotion will save you money in fuel but costs something like £13,000 to buy. For most average drivers diesel will save a couple of hundred quid a year over petrol, in other words, an amount which fades into irrelevence compared with the cost of the car.

If you set out to spend £5000 on any given car, a diesel will save you money from day one

Not to sure on the mpg but my 1.9 SDI polo (shear raw power...;)) is pretty good fairly cheap to run we've had it 7 years now and it was water damaged when we bought it fixed it up and the only problem we've had with it was me stretching the handbrake cable when i was learning to drive :D I'd recommend it and they're pretty cheap too.

Aero

EDIT: I put about £6 worth of fuel in every week and i do roughly 50-60 miles

At the cheap end of the market, small petrol is better than small diesel. Take the c1, the 1.0 petrol is cheaper to buy, faster and nearly as good on fuel as the diesel, and petrol is cheaper.

However, cars in this range are all not fun or interesting. Certainly not an only car choice imo

gotta agree about the old rotary pump golfs they're amazing on fuel, 90 or 110 bhp are older engines, the best ones.

The PDs ain't bad. I get over 55mpg from the Fabia on a normal motorway run. Eco driving gets well over 60mpg.

That said with my current mileage and the price of diesel I'd likely be better off with a petrol car ... shame Skoda never made a 1.8T version.

How about one old (96) Pugrot 106 1.5D

£150 for the car
never get less than mid 60,s mpg

Hows that for cheap running costs been all over the country in it totally reliable.
