the forum and swearing

I think if i can survive on here for a good few years without swearing then Anybody can.
I swear at everything, Life, the Telly, my dog, I even swear at the noise the bog makes when i flush it **** that thing is noisy.
Yes i am un educated & yes i have No other words to express myself, What of it !!!

You guys. This is a serious issue. We have to think of the children. It's a slippery slope, one day it's a little ****** and blinding, the next the place has been renamed Haut la OcUK and the mods will be roughly taking children down the back passage.

Don't you see?

While we're at it, can I ask for some clarification with regards to pages linked to from within a post?

I understand that OcUK cannot be held responsible for the content of other websites but when so many posts are aimed at places like You Tube and its associated comments section, where do the mods draw the line with regards to offensive language in links?

I myself have been suspended for linking to a page with swearing in it but many You Tube links are awash with offensive words and remain untouched.

I think the most worrying thing about this thread is the 179 post n00b who seems to think he can run this well established forum better than the moderators....

If you dont like it, move on, I belive the internet is a fairly big place...

I don't obviously know where the line is drawn but YouTube comments change so frequently on some videos it would surely come down to exactly what time of the day or even hour you looked at the link whether swearing was contained within which would make it very difficult to moderate and somewhat different to linking to an essentially static page filled with swearing.

I once RTM'd a post because it had swearing in it.

Got an email telling me to grow up!

Have you reported these links?

I don't believe you. That simply cannot be the entire story, why would you let that lie?

Such links as Urban Dictionary are frowned upon because they generally end up containing lots and lots of swearing. Youtube is a bit more difficult. As mentioned they have their own moderation policy and if a video has many comments with harsh swear words in they'll generally be cleaned up by them.

Feel free to RTM, but obviously as mentioned the mods are only human, we do what we can :)

Don't believe me, that's up to you.

Let it lie because I didn't (and still don't) know how the RTM works, as if it goes to one person or a list. If I get a response from the don who tells me to grow up do I reply to him and risk causing issues or what?

So I just thought "fine, sod you" and carried on.

Doesn't really bother me if the don had an attitude problem, just thought I was doing the right thing.

Rightyo, thanks.

Is it worth putting a general comment in the FAQ along the lines of checking what you're linking to, especially as it can get you a suspension?

This thread reminds me of the days in MSN Chat where you had to re-word the swearies so the bots wouldn't kick you out :D

Well the next thing would be to raise it with an admin, talk to the moderator and ask why they felt you needed to grow up... if you raised an actual issue that you thought needed looking at (and you didn't actually need to grow up) then you should have followed it up.

There's nothing inherently wrong with telling people to grow up. I've done it myself, and it could have been me you were told by, but if any of the people I'd told asked me why I'd said it I wouldn't have been offended.

Rightyo, thanks.

Yeah sure. I'll also point out that breathing through your mouth is one way of avoiding bad smells ;) :D

The part of me which has a sufficiently good command of the english language to articulate what I mean without resorting to swearing.

Having a good command of the English language has nothing whatsoever to do with it. I pride myself on having quite a good command of the English language and an IQ well above average. I find, on many occasions, that there is no suitable substitute for a profanity and when I consider the word ****ing expresses my meaning better than flipping, I'll use it.

Get down off your high horse (I wish I'd saved the pic of the horse with the really long legs now - NM, I'm sure somebody will oblige soon enough) and stop trying to cover your repressive tendencies with claims to the higher moral ground - it doesn't wash with me.

According to that Gilly is wrong, either that or the FAQ is wrong.

You've been here almost as long as me, surely you know by now that neither of the above scenarios is likely :p

May have depended on the word....

If you reported 'bugger' or 'sod' (please delete if breaking rules) then Id have probubly told you to grow up as they are a bit tame, but some rediculously obscene word would be another story...

EDIT: For BigStan

No swearing, posting of "adult" material, personal attacks or "trolling

3 out of those 4 happen on a regular basis on this forum. RE: Adult material sure its not XXX porn adult stuff but certainly the language on here is not something i'd want my kids to be "educating" themselves with. (if i had kids of course :D)

Personal attacks are a regular occurrence and mods do step in when it blows up out of proportion but they do let the one-off attacks slide. e.g. this very thread lol

I hate members like you - little brown-nosing creeps.

Just STFU and let the Mods do the Modding thanks.

Trolling is part of daily life here unfortunately.

Swearing is quite well handled though imo. They do crack down on that quickly.
