I can't believe how good Vista x64 is with 4GB memory....

Sorry to clutter this place, but I've been sticking with XP for years and years since release....Loved SP1 and things just got clunky with SP2....

Anyways, I got a Q6600 and 4GB of RAM recently plonked it in and did a full format and installed XP, seemed to not really go much faster than with my old setup, in so far as doing small tasks and multitasking, opening programs etc.

I bought a legit Vista Ultimate key off a mate and I gotta say, its amazing how smooth and fast it all goes with a beutiful interface that finally matches the hardware being used.

Those gadgets on the sidebar with a clock and newsfeeds and what not, I.E 7 loads instantly (it did before but just feels much more streamlined) starts up quicker....

Dunno its just great, just want to say that I hate all you MS cynics for putting me off trying it all this time. I'm not sure if its because of me quad core chip or the 4GB memory or what but this is faster than XP, looks better and is just, well better.

No driver problems etc yet, just a few annoying things like the "Games Explorer". I like to have my games in different folders according to genre not just plonked in one big folder

Aye. It's going to take the rest of the world another couple years yet to realise what you've realised :) It's such a slick and smooth OS to use. I think the two major factors are Superfetch and Aero Glass (no not the nicety effects, but the Desktop Compositor!)

I still have XP x64 at work and it is becoming ever more noticably slower. I said a week or so ago that Vista SP1 didn't speed up my home machine "that much" but I may have to retract that because ever since I put SP1 on at home my machine at work has, phsycologically at least, become much slower.

Yep, totally, lol I feel like such a geek :p just so nice everything not having that horrible "grittyness" about it that XP has. Like you said its not so much how it looks its how it looks that goes so well with how it moves...

lol anyway :o if anyone heard me saying this sort of thing out loud I'd be laughed at so hush hush ;)

I've only just installed Vista x64 myself and I have to say.. wow.. love it, my only gripe is authorising every ******* thing. But I can live with that.

I upgraded to 4GB of ram a couple of weeks ago (need to update sig) and I agree with all of the above statements, everything runs extremely well.

Definately i went from 1Gb to 4Gb and probably noticed a 10x increase! Totally blown away by the difference. I thought Vista was a dog a few months back, but the difference is night and day now...

Agreed, when I went from 2gb to 4gb the difference was astounding. Vista is a joy to use now

You can disable that in the user control panel it's the first thing I do whenever I'm near a vista machine.

It's either that or the computer gets a very fatal lesson in mavity.

Must say that whenever I've just worked with Vista and then come back to my own set-up I feel like I've been left behind. Will be upgradig though in the Summer to Vista 64-bit and another 2 gig of ram to keep it company.

I'm on 32bit but with 4GB ram and quad core and indeed everything flies even if the 4GB is actually 3325MB "usable" memory it still loads everything in record speed ! I just wonder "Just" how much faster 64bit version is if anyone has done a switch? I'll probably do a full reinstall later this year but for now everything is super"

Ahem, could you tell me how exactly? :( I'm pure vista noob. :(

Don't disable UAC, use a program called TweakUAC to put it into silent mode. Means UAC stays active (which is a good thing), but makes the prompts go away. Best of both worlds.

i have a license of 64 bit Vista but am always concerned with software compatibility, i have had problems with dvd (backups only of course) copying. i also develop in vs2005 so need to make sure it works.

anyone got links/names of good dvd copying software for 64 that gets rid of copy protection properly?

Loads of DVD copying software works on Vista x64.

VS2005 works fine too. You just have to install a VS service pack for it.

i got dumped on by quite a few users about this very thing, i was saying for me it's almost compulsory to have 4gb in Vista.

of course those who keep saying 2gb is plenty have never tried 4gb themselves ;)

I have had 4 gb since the get go and found at first it was awful to use, but once drivers started to mature and hotfixes were created it performed as well as XP which cant be said about XP and win 98.

Ive got vista and 4gb ram. Unfortunately though i only have 32bit vista as those stupid idiots at dell will sell a machine with 4gb ram, but do not supply 64bit drivers.
