Recommend me a free firewall please

Hi,

I'm currently using PC-cillin, but plan to use NOD32 & another firewall when the subscription runs out.

I'm looking for a firewall that will basically alert me when anything's accessing the internet and give me the choise of allowing it or denying it - so basically when something tries to get on the internet it should say "blabla.exe is trying to access the internet, Allow or Deny?" and "Tick here to use this action every time", so basically I build up my own set of firewall rules.

I don't want the firewall to have any stupid 'what it thinks is safe' list of programs, I want it to ask every time something tries to access the internet from my PC, even if it's a known Windows file.

Oh, and another important this is it must be nice and unobtrusive.

Thanks,
Craig.

comodo or pctools firewall are the best free ones ive used with comodo being slightly better give em a try :)

Had PCTools running on my other PC for a while, but it needed a rule for each computer on the network to let them have access to shares.

Will try Comodo now as suggested twice :)

Alreet chaps. :)

Just downloaded this and it seems pretty sleek. Quick noob question though... can I now disable Windows Firewall (XP Service Pack 3) because I am using this? Or can I run both side by side. I am running both at the moment and have not noticed any issues.

Thanks for any input!

Would love to use Comodo but I have my PS3 connected via ICS to my PC that Comodo is running on and they hate each other. Cant get the two to run together. :(

So it is your PS3 and Comodo that don't get on? Just a bit confused by your mention of ICS. :)

Well the PS3 connects to then net via ICS. It works fine wired to the router or even its standalone wireless or with ICS with no firewall. Stick Comodo in the equation though and it stuck on NAT type 3 no matter what settings I change, I know its probably something im doing wrong but given up trying!

Are you getting the new network detected window when you install Comodo? You might need to change those settings and let the PS3 access that.

It detects the network and gives it a limited access it seems. I think its just a matter of sitting down and trawling through the menus and use trial and error to see what I can change. I think half the problem is the complicated layout.

common sense ;p

there's really no need for a software firewall.. your router is a hardware firewall, and as long as you don't go downloading cracks, smileys or screensavers, I can't see any reason why you'd get a bug.

I haven't *ever* used a firewall/antivir, except for a quick scan before each Lan I attend.. and I never have any issues.

Sorry to ask yet another question. But I have another PC on the network and I'm getting events logged saying it has blocked it. So I've added the IP to the My Network Zone and stuck it under the zone I called "Home Network" which has my IP in as well. I then went to the Stealth Port Wizard and set the "Home Network" to trusted. But after clearing the event log, Comodo is still blocking that IP?

Any ideas what i've done wrong?

Thanks.

If you disable Comodo does the network then work? Have you tried following the help file to check you are doing things right?

I went through the help file yeah, I may take another look later on. But it's definately blocking the IP address of the other PC and I can no longer see the PC on my Network.

I'll try again. :)
