Hi guys,

For over ten years now I've slowly been stock piling 1p's and 2p's in 4.5ltr Bell’s bottle. I've nearly finished filling the bottle (as you can see from the picture) but before I empty it to bank it, I have a couple of questions :D

1. Has anyone here done this before, and if so, how much roughly do they hold when full? I know this will vary depending on the 1/2p ratio – so no smart-arse comments please :p

I’m just curious… I can’t begin to hazard a guess?

2. How do banks feel about handling this much copper? I remember hearing a while back, that in general they don’t like taking a lot of copper in one go?

I think those little plastic money bags that you get from banks go up to £5 (Mixed) for copper? Someone please correct me if I am wrong.

When I do eventually attempt to bank it all, I would probably stagger any exchange over several days, but also over several branches of my bank?

Any thoughts?

I do this every year so i have a bit of extra spending money for holiday and i normally get about £40 - £50 when its full (5 litre bells) but i do also put the odd silver in there (not many though perhaps 5 - 10 pounds worth). The banks are fine about this, but you will have to bag the coins up. I believe coppers go in seperate bags to the value of 100pence each. Alternatively places like asda have a machine that will convert it for you if you tip it in (but it cost money - something like 10% so i dont bother!)

edit: by silvers i mean 5 pence's and the odd 10 pence, but not anymore then that. So in conclusion i would expect a return of around £30 - £40 :)

Doubt it will even be enough to buy yourself another bells bottle :p
Probably not of that size! Can you even get them any more? I've not seen them in ages

The bottle's probably worth more than the contents ;)

My mates mam filled one with silver and copper and had £300!

Im going to get one of those boxes that the only way you can get inside is to smash it and ram it full of notes soon for a holiday. :D

Is this a competition, my guess is £47.56p :D

I've never had problems with barclays taking masses of copper. Just go when they are slack:)

in response to Phil's comment:
It's a joke if the bank won't take it from you, as that is what they are supposed to do...tell them you are making a deposit...they abolutely have to take it if it was my bank or i'd leave them for someone else.

I have loads of 1p,2p,5p,10p's in my draw. Might aswell count them. From that bottle I'm guessing probably around £55-£57 in there.

no need for the bank , asda have coin machines that you can deposit any amount of copper into, it gives you a receipt to take to cashier who then gives you the cash.

£37.44 is my guess
