Off to uni this summer, hopefully, and was thinking, £100 would be a complete waste of my money on a tv, due to the fact i only watch the Simpson's at 6 and top gear when its on! For this reason i was thinking of getting a TV card for my pc, just wondering though, can they be detected by the authorities, because I'd rather go without the Simpson's and top gear if there was a chance of a massive fine! Especially with BBC iPlayer and 4od around now etc!

So I take it this is another "i dont want to buy a TV licence but want to own a tuner" thread.....

If you own and use it, you need a license. You will also need one to be able to buy one from a retail store (online shops not so much).

But you will get pleanty of notice if you are under investigation and getting caught is fairly slim. but yes, you should have one.

Well, i think it is a con tbh, especially as i watch so little, so if there is a massive chance of me getting caught, i will go without tv, it's not really a massive problem, but it would be nice to flick it on for the Simpson's etc! I was just wondering, if the authorities are able to trace it, surely to do that, the card would have to transmit, maybe im wrong though!

I doubt you'll have much need for the simpsons at uni. I bet that if you're in your room doing very little then you'll be on your pc anyway, so would still be hard to watch the simpsons in the background.

they don't use 'tracers' or anything, they just assume everyone has a tv iirc

will you have internet access? if so, no need to get a tv card for simpsons or top gear

Wouldn't bother with the TV to be honest - you can still use 4OD and iPlayer etc, plus of course there are other ways of watching TV shows online (allegedly!).

Do what I did, and wait 2-4 weeks before taking a tv up, in that time you work out what your housemates watch and just watch their tv instead, if you want. I still brought one up because I've started watching quite a bit, run out films now :p

Top gear is on iPlayer,

Simpson's is on every video site in the world.

We get threatening letters all the time, best thing is they say

"if you don't have a tv call this premium rate line and arrange an inspection"

Next letter

You have not confirmed that you do not own a tv, we shall arrange an inspection" (never have though)

So yeah, call up and pay to have an inspection or get it free ^^

TV detector vans DO exist. And they will pick up your TV card just as easily as they would a TV. They can even tell what channel you are watching.

Completely false. The only way they can detect a TV is if they physically see or hear one. All they use is a Database of every address in the UK which they cross-check with their own Database of every License holders address and then harass those not on their Database.

Wow, I didn't think anyone in the world ever believed the detector van propaganda.

i had 5 letters in one year at uni and binned the lot.

op, you cant expect ppl to recommend that its ok for you to break the law, thats your business

personally , id rather have lovefilm subscrption than pay for a tv and license

basically, buy a TV card and use it as you would, and if the TV blokes come over:
A) you don't have to admit them entry to your flat/room/whatever
B) unplug the aerial from the back, delete the desktop icon, and say "this thing can do TV!?! i never knew, i bought it like that!" and you'll be fine

They just spam you with letters and I've never heard of them actually turning up. They don't have the resources to go through all the student flats without tv licences.

I think the bbc is the best tv company and am quite happy to pay for a licence though.
