Hi,

not sure if this should go here or in software but I will try my luck with you guys :)

Currently rebuilding a friends pc which is fairly basic, a 3ghz skt478 celeron, 1gb ram and a 9800Pro, we are trying out Vista Ultimate (my disc to see if it will run OK) 32bit, it installs fine but I cant seem to get Aero working properly, transparent windows for one thing. I have downloaded and installed the latest ATi drivers but it still gives me issues.

Also when I check device manager it has an exclamation mark on the 9800 Pro saying something about the drivers being stopped due to an issue (pc is off now so cant properly check).

I installed the motherboard drivers OK so not sure what the issue is.

Do I need to do something else? The computer seems perfectly up to the task of running vista, I can go back to XP but he would like to have Vista.

Cheers :)

Convince him that vista is a mistake for a PC with that spec, It could probably do it but not with 1GB of ram to start with. Over half his ram will be used before he does anything. Also you probably want to avoid Aero, its nice but its just going to consume more resources.

The explanation mark means your hardware isnt working, I would think Vista comes with 9800Pro drivers built in, so its more of a hardware issue, rather than software.

Is the old PSU good enough? Have you plugged in the external power into the 9800Pro?

Have you ran the hardware rating thingy since you installed the ATI drivers?

Hi, no I didnt, took ages to get it up and running due to an issue with the onboard sound, will it make a difference? Does Vista disable aero until its run? I dont think it happened when I installed Vista on this PC with my 8800GTS.

I know, I didnt think it would run very well but its not too bad, he just wants it for the net and some movies/music, I thought the media centre might be useful. Also I thought it would fix the issue with the onboard sound but it hasn't. I may well just put XP back on.

Yes, I guessed about the exclamation mark, but it ran perfectly under XP for him for over a year, it has a 350W PSU I gave him last year that ran my old PC which was higher spec than his. Also the ATi drivers installed without issue on it.

Yes the extra power cord is plugged into the card.

Odd issue, will have another go tomorrow but have to go to work tonight.

Cheers for the replies, will give me some other things to think about for his P.O.S. :)

doesn't ATi have hotfix drivers to make them work properly with agp cards? guessing the 9800 pro is agp, twas x800 that first went pci-e wasn't it? either way a year ago ATi probo didn't have problems with agp, at the moment they have more issues with it as, well, so few people with agp cards will even remotely come close to bothering updating drivers.

I had a 9800 pro about a year ago, and it worked with vista aero perfectly!

I have downloaded and installed the latest ATi drivers but it still gives me issues.

What sort of issues are you having? specific error messages? etc..

Also, you do know where to enable vista aero, right?

Correct I believe agp is not supported in the latest set. I believe the Catalyst 8.1 set do work so give that a try.

Dload the 32bit vista set.

If you run Windows update and let it install its own drivers for the 9800 Pro then Aero should work fine. I had this problem 2 months ago on my friends computer.

thanks for the replies guys, in the end I have put XP back on there, tried the earlier drivers but no go on that either, must be a Vista thing as it works OK under XP.

Cheers anyway :)
