You might need a new CTRL key, it's a common failure point. Check ebay for a replacement

Is it a USB keyboard and are your other USB devices working properly?

If the other devices are working it will be a keyboard fault.

update the drivers on the keyboard (firmware/software etc), if that doesnt work then your keyboard is faulty. and will most probably need replacing. i doubt it will be an American layout causing the problem.

Sounds like ole32.dll may have become unregistered.

Try the following;

Click start ->run and enter the following command ;

regsvr32 ole32.dll

Let us know whether this fix works.

have you tried restarting your system yet? once same thing happened to me but after restart it was all back to normal,
