Hello all,

During MSN convo's with rg-Tom tonight he told me about how a Supra Twin-Turbo was crazily cheap to insure...I didn't believe him. So I ran a quote.

£2500!!!

Now consider I'm 19, 1ncb, SP30 and a claim against my name I thought that was very very good! did a bit of shopping around and that was the cheapest!

Now I'm not buying one at the minute but I'll be looking properly for a new car for August, the insurance will be a bit cheaper then because I'll be 20 and I'll have the cash for a new car then as well.

So people, tell me...common faults, average running costs...how ditches per year etc :p What to look for when buying...

Seen them on PH for 6 - 7k.

EDIT: Que rants "you'll end up in a hedge etc." blame Tom because he put the silly idea in my head :p

Seriously mate, I wouldn't.

They're a £40k+ car, and DO still have the associated running costs, plus once you get one, you'll get the modding bug! ;)

Oh, and given your love of ditches, I don't want another one written off for when I can afford one :p

Why not look at a 'lude or 'teg?

more expensive to insure believe it or not ;)

I won't, 320bhp would scare the **** out of me a while at least, plus I couldn't afford the insurance of modding one.

Fair comment :p

These will be considered, I was just looking into them due to the fact they appear to cost peanuts to insure.

do what I did, and get a toyota soarer which is basically a cheaper to buy, cheaper to insure, less likely to be nicked.... supra

you're young.... have some fun ;)

anyway.... supra running costs......... 20 mpg, expensive tyres.

DIY servicing if you can drop oil and change some plugs, the turbos are fairly easy to get out and remove if they go, though you'll need about £600 to get someone to refurb them.

Brakes are a piece of **** to change as well. Generally fairly reliable cars, the engines are dead strong. Get a gay auto like me and make mincemeat of the double clutching granny shifting manual owners =]

200SX if you want something like that.

I had a quote the other year when I was thinking out loud - 22 years old, modded with exhaust, lowered etc.... £700 fully comp.

By the way, you know that £2500 on insurance is almost £7 a day on insurance don't you!

o I ran a quote.

lol... i'm not sure "very very good" is the appropriate term there :D

Just get something quick yet more sensible... you're only 19, with years of spunky motoring ahead of you... move up gradually not in a single leap!

Some form of Celica out of the question? - I know nothing about them, other than at 20 with 0NCB, 2 accidents 1 claim against me it'd be about £2600 to insure for me...no, I'm not stupid, to me £1500 is expensive insurance. ;)

Compared to say a Scooby turbo which is running 126bhp less, slower to 60 and is 2.5k MORE to insure I'd say it's bloody good!

I got a quote on an M5 of £4000 today! :D

How the hell are you getting quotes of £5k on a scooby which is slower?!

To be fair, by the time people like Phate and myself are of age for having such cars with reasonable insurance, we're going to be so stumped with mortages and insane taxes, that we simply won't be able to afford these sort of cars... that's if they haven't been banned by then

It's still £2,500 that you have nothing to show for at the end of the day.
