The 5th Gen Prelude 2.2 Vtec seems to be a bit thirsty oil wise recently, I've got a horrible feeling I already know the answer to the question Im about to pose, but hoping you guys may have some ideas.

Preludes got 98k on the clock and recently started drinking oil at a rate of 1.5L per 1k miles. I've also noticed no matter how much I clean my exhaust pipes even after a small drive they end up oiled up and black (so its certainly sending the oil that way).

Now its only recently been used exclusively as a weekend car, so isnt seeing extensive usage and what usage it does get is spirited :) (but allowing it to warm up properly before hammering it) Last service was approx 10k ago, I know that needs doing, but the amount its drinking is leading me to believe I've got rings letting oil through and thus an engine rebuild? Or, could a oil change and filter be the solution? Dont seem to have a lack of power, and petrol usage is... as bad as it should be.

The H22A engines do use some oil. Mine's on about 500ml per 1000 miles. The FRM liners in the cylinders are very hard - it's not until about 200k that they're worn to seal properly!! (Below that, it's actually the rings wearing to the bores, rather than the bores to the rings like on most engines!)

Try doing a full oil/filter change. That will remove any old stuff, and give you a slightly better indication by having the same oil everywhere.

Excellent, thanks ConfusedTA - Andy isnt it?

Would have asked over at PUK but OCUK dishes out the answers quicker :)

I'll try a full oil change and filter. How annoying I've bought the wrong Oil, Halfords chart said Preludes range of oils were 0W-30, 10W-40 and something else, as 0W-30W was the most expensive and said "performace" thought I was doing the best.

Thanks Confused and Simon :)

Good choice. Bit thin though, probably why it is using a bit. How many miles have you done on it?

The Castrol went in on Saturday, so approx 100 miles on that. The batch before was fully synthetic Mobile One stuff, which did 1.5L for 1k miles. Just worrying me the amount of oil coming out the exhausts.

I always thought fully synthetics were better than semi's? Or it certainly was the case with my 2stroke Aprilia years back. Is it the case the oil is just too thin with fully synthetic oils and burns off too quickly?

I've ran 2 Accord Type-Rs and now the teg on 5W40 and never had any problem with oil getting burned overly quick. 1.5l per 1000miles is a bit crazy, personally I'd be a bit worried.

I wish mine was that slow. :( I bet mine is about 1L per 500 miles.
