Essex, innit?
Hi again.

So I'm looking at earrings for my fiancé.

Her engagement ring is platinum. It's what she wanted (she chose it) - I'm not complpetely sure why. It's also substantially more expensive than white gold (twice the price).

When choosing earrings, should I be going for platinum also, or since they're only little and hidden by hair, does it not matter?

Also, on a simialr subject, the engagement diamond is Princess cut (square). Should I be going for the same cut earrings? Or again, does it not matter?

Sensible opinions please...

Thanks

James

Platinum is more expensive as it is rarer.

My gf (who works for Beaverbrooks) was told during training at work that if all the discovered platinum in the world was melted down and poured into an Olympic sized swimming pool, the melted platinum would only get to your ankle!

Gives you an idea of how little there is in comparison to Gold!

My suggestion would be that it depends on your finances, if you can afford it and you know your partner would appreciate it even more than why not?

Best of luck!

100% go for platinum.

My own wedding ring is platinum, as is my wifes wedding, engagement and eternity (cost me a ****ing fortune!!!)

Got a mate who purchased his now wife a platinum engagement ring, simple band with a single diamond BUT she got a white gold ring.

After 6 years the wedding ring is looking tacky, no way can it compete with the platinum and although they have them polished every year (free service from the gold smith), it's just losing it's look.

My wifes however, they all look identical, brand new, certainly keeps the "just bought" look.

Platinum all the way.

Plantinum, i spent a fortune on white gold items for my mrs, but because she wears them daily every 4 - 6 months she needs to have them re-dipped as they tarnish a yellow colour, as the white gold starts to fade away. The last item i got her i made sure was platinum cost a lot more but so much worth it.

Not purely, but do girls wear diamond earrings just going to work etc? (I don't really pay much attention to these things!)

The earrings are for a surprise my 6yr old niece will give to her on the morning of the wedding (I'm not allowed to see her). She doesn't know about it. It's a romantic gesture

Cheers

Hmmmm, To be honest, here's how I'd look at it.

If you CAN afford the earings, then go for it. If they're only going to be worn for the wedding, then in a few years down the line they can be looked at as a reminder and they'll still look as good as new. They won't fade or have that sheen to them. And your mrs could probably wear them for things like anniversaries.

But if you're struggling to get things sorted in terms of finances for the entire event, to be honest I wouldn't have it as a priority.

Certainly a lovely gesture, I'll give you that.

Platinum all the way. Gold is softer and thus is not good for items warn daily.

She will remember the wedding, she'd remember earrings as part of that - no doubt. and as ~J~ says - priorities!

Money is not an issue. I know she'd love them.

On top of that I'm buying from the US where it's a lot cheaper, so I can get more value for money. I did the same with the engagement ring and had the loose diamond imported and then set here in London.

(If anyone's interested, check out www.uniondiamond.com. I've used them twice and they are excellent.)

But obviously, I don't want to pay for something that's not absolutely necessary.

you could go for palladium - its shiny and white like platinum but won't tarnish like white gold - its also about half the price of gold.

If you are getting rings... go for platinum as white gold has to have something done to it to bring it back to its shiniest as it fades quite a bit over time.

If you are deciding on the earrings I would go for white gold as I VERY rarely hear people asking "oh your earrings are they silver or white gold or platinum" The most popular question is "oh are those real diamonds or cubic circonia?" not bothered about the metal, just the stone.

All this I am talking about my boss who's boyf took her to Tiffanys in NYC to buy her a 1.5 carat diamond engagement ring which probably cost > £10K

Unbelievable.

Platinum all the way.

Just because the earrings might be hidden by her hair does not make a blind bit of difference to the female species.

All women have x-ray vision and can see these things. You will get a thumbs up from her friends and they will all like you.

Result!!!!

Personally wouldn't bother me.

Edit: Actually this is a wedding present isn't it and its matching the ring?

OK changed my mind! :p

I guess the fiance prefers the "platinum/white gold" colour over gold.
Given the choice then Platinum is the more valuable metal and harder wearing so would be the obvious choice.
"Standard" gold would be preference to white gold - white gold although slightly harder wearing than yellow gold is a less valuable metal due to the added materials to give you the white colour.

Tiffany's are not actually that good. They are also very overpriced. best bet is to go to that site I posted above. You can chose the specific diamond by your own parameters, and have it set, as opposed to being limited to whatever Tiffany have already set ;

Sharon's is a 1.5ct Princess Cut, perfect cut, H in colour (one below the purest) and no inclusions ;)

Also, it was GIA certified on my birthday and has a lazer inscription on it ;)

Anyway, I've decided: platinum. It's 200 USD more which in the scheme of things isn't much.

I've also decided that the earrings need to be the same cut as the ring: princess cut.

Sorted.

So you didn't really need our help at all then! :p

Hee hee!

Yeah 1.5 princess cut the other things I overheard her say were "bds1, 1.52" so the 1.52 must be the carat... dunno what the other stuff is.

Did I guess the price near enough? (£10-15K)?
