Actually shocked at this...

Shrug, it's their mortgage at the end of the day. I guess the question is if a senior executive of a company is expected to split his time between two locations can he buy a property in the second location and claim his mortgage as a legitimate business expense while he is working there? I honestly don't know the answer to that.

I know at my company it's not been unknown for people to rent properties at a second location where they've been sent and get the company to pay the rent. But don't know if that extends to mortgages.

I think it's quite normal for people working away from home to get some form of expenses. My mum works away and gets £700 a month for rent and bills, but she has to provide receipts for it and I very much doubt her company would pay a mortgage for her.

Is there anything MP's cant claim back on expenses? Christ its no wonder they are oblivious to the rather large price rises on simple everyday things and would also explain some of the ridiculous tax rises announced yesterday. Its a shame they cant come live in the real world for a moment where things cost real money. However being good old chaps that we are, nothing can or will be done and whoever wins the next election nothing will change because why would MP's decide to live like the poor saps who keep this sorry country going.

The fact this is for their SECOND home just rubs salt into the wound. God knows how many thousands of potential first time buyers cant even get their own place and thats before having to find the cash to furnish it. There should be a bloody uproar over this!

Note that they can't claim absolutely everything, as it says they can claim upto 23,000....

This whole 2nd home thing is such rubbish. Many of them live within commuting distance of Westminster and use this benefits system to fund their retirement package..eer...I mean property portfolio...or I mean, essential London crashpad.

I think all expense claims should be made publicly available. They might think twice before taking the **** then.

"within reasonable limits" but "antique, luxury or premium-grade" furnishings are not allowed, nor are "extravagant or luxurious"

My ****. Those allowances are disgutting tbh.

How can a £10,000 kitchen or a £6,000 grand bathroom be classed as anything but extravagant?

Whilst I can accept they will claim travel expenses (hotels / meals etc) just like a director of a PLC company, I don't understand why they should have allowances for anything on a second home?!

If you are an MP then you should be paid a very good salary, afterall you are running the country. If we paid megabucks then we might get some decent people in!

Do any of the us get the privilege of a second home just because our house is a bit far from our work? It's called commuting and these leeches should try it rather than line their own pockets with our money.

They get paid enough not to need allowances but what do you expect from people who deny the rest of us a decent wage rise and then award themselves an obscene amount.

Note that they can't claim absolutely everything, as it says they can claim upto 23,000....

Exactly, it's just the same as 23k extra salary, but not everyone claims it. Would people be in such an uproar if MP's were on 23k more than they are being paid now? Somehow I doubt it.

The elected mayor of Stoke-on-Trent is coming under criticism for hiring two £900 per night rooms (hopefully suites at that price!) at a hotel while attending a conference.

With particularly apt timing, this year's council tax bills have just come out. Many people got the council tax bill on the same day they found out about the mayor's no doubt essential accomodation at this conference.
