String theory predicts possible extra dimensions of spacetime. What are extra dimensions and how might we detect them if they exist?

Apparantly we all live in Braneworlds...

Braneworlds

Pretend you lived on your computer screen and could only move on that two dimensional surface. The computer exists in three space dimensions but you can only move on a two dimensional subspace made by the screen, so the spacetime that you experience would look like three dimensions (two space plus time) rather than four.

My head hurts:p

For a few reasons, there is no lolcat, failboat, omgzor!!!111, bbc news links, you tube clips, myspace, MSN, furry dice, or other such tripe.

It's a good stab at explaining to the audience with a passing interest what is going on in the world of physics.
I think that is a good thing.

On the other hand it might be a load of ********.

Don't get me wrong, it's a nice little theory, but isn't it just that, a theory with no actual meaning? (this is not a rhetorical question)

As opposed to other theories....? :/

A theory is just that - a theoretical understanding of a given thing, situation or concept.

No, not as opposed to other theories. I was watching the Stephen Hawking program and I couldn't help but think theories are pretty pointless unless they mean or lead to something more significant.

You need the theory, before you can prove, disprove, or gain anything from it.
