hi guys

i'm thinking of upgrade my 100mb network to gigalan, every machines on my network got gigalan NIC so would like to see benchmark/review to see if it's worth it.

i'm poo at googling :(

cheers :)

If you're using a good gigabit chip such as Intel CSA solutions, expect 800-900mbit speeds. Some cheap stuff like Realtek barely manages 500mbit. It helps if the chip isn't on the PCI bus...

depends on how much traffic you need to pass through your LAN whether it's worth it.

hdd bottlenecks will negate full gbit performance anyway so i wouldn't worry about not having the absolute best NIC, unless you have raid setups on multiple boxes....which sounds unlikely or you'd most likely already be using a gb lan :)

well sometime i watch streaming video from main machine from upstairs, the video get lag something like buffering for first 10 secs etc

yes HD video (mpeg4 i think), 20mb/s??? dunno :o

so 100/8 = 12.5mb max speed

1000/8 = 125mb max speed, i know hard drive wont write that speed but should be able give plenty room for streaming HD video? i'm also planing to build a media centre PC for living room LCD so will watch stream hd video.

edit: if i watch the said HD video locally on my laptop, no lag or buffering etc,

DVD's? i doubt the 100mbit is responsible for that, you would be seeing constant pausing if that were the problem.

if you want to stream full HD material (20mb+) you probably want gbit but even your current 10/100 should handle most/all X264 HD/WMV-HD.

but gbit switches are pretty cheap so you may as well just get one and be done with it :)

laptop - rock XCT 2.0ghz, 1gb ddr2, 60gb 7200rpm hard drive, 7800GTX 256mb, marvell gigalan

main PC - E4300, 2gb ddr2 ram, 74gb raptor, 6800GT 256mb, asrock mobo with onboard gigalan

download box = P4 1.6ghz, 1GB ddr ram, ide 250GB 7200rpm, onboard intel gigalan, onboard intel gfx

laptop connected to 100mb ADSL router. download box and main PC connected to 100mb switch which connected to the said router. all cable are cat5

well basically i "test" the said HD video locally on the main rig and laptop, they played fine but when streaming cross the network. get bad lag/buffering.

test your throughput copying from download box to your main box, should get at least 10mb/s right?

also ping your download box from your main box and see if those pings look ok.

right, got myself passmark software ;)

just tested network benchmark, between download box to main rig, laptop to main rig and main rig to download box. all got nearly same results

average transmission = 94254 Kbits/sec
