Which would be the best setup to last for a while? I STILL have not decided on my upgrade path:rolleyes:

Noise, performance with AA/AF at 1680x1050 would be the most important considerations....

2x 8800GT 1024mb - £360 - the Gainward seems to be good, with quiet cooling, but is 1gb overkill?

2x 8800GT 512mb - £280 - the Leadtek with Zalman looks promising, from noise point of view

2x 8800GTS 512mb - £380 - the BFG OC variant, looks good and is supposed to be quiet

2x 8800GTX 756mb - £445 - the POV ones, but not sure about heat/noise levels

At the moment I can't see any advantage of changing anything else in my setup, but am open to suggestions. I just don't see anywhere I can gain a lot other than GFX.

2x 8800GTX would be the most powerful.

Was going to say you could wait for the 9800GTX to come out, but they're not that impressive over the 8800GTX.

Craig.

Personally, i would go for the 2x8800GT 512 (G92) and maybe get two aftermarket coolers o/c them to GTS/X levels, should be near silent with some great performance for that res. But space would be a big issue if you went for a Themalright HR-03 range.

But that would bring you in the price range of some of the new Nvida cards coming around, wither or not it they would be worth it is yet to be really discovered i think might be better off holding on to the cash for that little bit longer :]

How about the POV 8800GTS 512? It's £165 so just £330 in SLI, performs almost just as good as the GTX for £115 less.

And yes 1Gb is overkill. for £360 you are much better off getting the GTS sli.

Go for the GTs, phenominal performance for the money. They will beat a 3870x2 and be about on par with a 9800gx2.

At the res you state forget about 1GB, go for the 512mb versions

Hmmm, yeah the POV GTS looks good too. Mainly looked at the BFG for warranty, but I guess 2yrs is not too bad. No way I would still have the cards that long anyway.

As for aftermarket cooling solutions, space is a little restricted in my setup, so the Thermalright coolers are definately not an option.

SLI sucks, save your money. It's buggy, badly implemented and poorly supported.

Get a GT or a GTS to tide you over, then wait for NVidia to stop playing the "we don't need to release a nextgen powerful card because there's no competition from AMD" game.

If you really want a dual GPU solution now, get the AMD X2 card and forget about NVidia IMO.

if going SLI the 9600GT setup seems to be great for the money as well....

But if the price of 9800GTX can beat 88GTX, they would be impressive. Afterall, they beat 88GTX in every single game according to the updated reviews as well as much much better overclocking potentials.

Just noticed that clocks on GX2/X2's are lower than having 2 cards in SLI/Crossfire

so 2 8800 GT should be easily as fast if not faster than a GX2
Not quite, the clocks on the 3870X2 cores are faster and yes the 9800GX2 is only clocked at 600 but it is the GTS core, not GT so 128 stream processors

Thanks for the replies guys. This time around it's quite a tough choice. Really at the moment there isn't too many games that my system struggles with, I just have the real urge to upgrade. Maybe my sensible side should take over and wait at least until the 9800GX2, GTX are officially released and proper benches are available before handing out my cash.

No matter what though, I need a new PSU for whichever upgrade path I chose. I am going for the Zalman 850, I take it that will be more than enough for anything I throw at it?

Do you have any prices for the 8900gtx ?, the 8800gtx can be had for £215.

Just get a single GTX and wait for the real next gen... buying SLI just because "you have an urge" seems a bit pointless and silly, unless of course you're loaded and money means nothing got you. In which case give some to me.:p

In case you were considering the new GX2 card, there's a pretty decent preview here at Tweaktown.

Long and the short of it, the AMD X2 is the better card albeit slightly noisier and more power hungry. Om nom nom nom.

:D I wish! I just happen to have a little bit kept to the side for my upgrade, and it's seriously burning a hole, and has been for more than a month now whilst I struggle to come to a decision:p

I have a 8800GTS 512mb and it plays everything just fine. You can also overclock it for some extra performance.

I take it you have a SLi mobo and not a crossfire, so lets forget about crossfire for the moment.

Personally I'd think 2x8800GT's are you best bet, as they are considerably cheaper than the other options but aren't that far off the other options in terms of performance.

8800GTS 512mb in SLi are also an option, they have a great standard cooler (it's quiet and vents air out of the case) and are great overclockers. These would be the best HIGH end option for your resolution.

8800GTX's and Ultra's aren't really beneficital over the 8800GT/GTS 512mb at your resolution, so if you REALLY need to upgrade, just get the cheapest pair of 8800GT's or 8800GTS's 512mb you can afford.

It might be worth you waiting abit until the newer 9800GTX/GX2 are released, as these will hopefully lower the price of the 8800 series. Fingers crossed.
