This really supports what I was thinking about NV launching the 98XX series just to buy some times due to AMD's complete lack of competition http://forums.extremeoverclocking.com/showthread.php?t=286990

NVIDIA "GT200" is pretty much ready, FPU monster ahoy?

More than a few NVIDIA partners have been revealing information about the upcoming "GT200" chip from NVIDIA. The G8x architectures has been with us for an extremely long time, and with the G9x refresh, NVIDIA has had more time than ever to complete the true next generation architecture, known as both "G100" and "GT200". Apparently, NVIDIA has been working hard because the story is that NVIDIA could present its next architecture any day now, if it wanted to, but instead it's going to keep riding the G92 wave until AMD is ready to launch the R7x series.
The only kind of information about the performance that has leaked was posted by German HT4U.net, which stated that GT200 would sport twice the FPU performance of G92. This doesn't say much about the actual performance though, but we would be very surprised if GT200 doesn't stand up to R7x.

So basically Nvidia are milking all of the consumers because they were expected to release something new around this time, and weren't prepared to release their "Big guns" until AMD were also ready... and while I actually appreciate them doing that (lets face it, AMD would have been destroyed were NV to release the GT200 now), it still means that anyone who upgrades from a current 8800-series card to a 9800 series card essentially has "MUG" stamped accross their forehead. It was never intended as anything other than a stop-gap, never intended to bring anything to the table.

Looks like the real next-gen is only a couple/few short months away considering that is when ATI are due to release their R7XX and 4870 series cards, which have monster specs if these are anything approaching accurate http://www.crysis-online.com/forum/index.php?topic=23024.msg320774.

I get the feeling that 2008 is going to be a great year for the GPU market, and we are going to see some REAL performance monsters form both NV and ATI.

:D

Why would they wait for ATi anyway?

I think the reason we've slowed down is that we've hit a wall in terms of heat and power usage and both nVidia and ATi have to wait for things like a die shrink, better coolers, etc before they can go ahead.

Why would they wait for ATi anyway?

Because the last thing the market needs is a lack of competition, and why would NV release their newest tech unless there was any real need? This way they can make some more money..

Highly highly doubtful, there is nothing to say that at all in any article or news we've read, and nothing to suggest that current cooling methods are incapable of coping with next-gen solutions. Besides which, the power requirements probably aren't that much more than current watt-guzzling cards, if they are at all..

They arn't waiting for ATi as such, they are just making the most money they can from their current refined good yeilding GPU.

Why bring something new out that costs more to make when people are still buying the old stuff?

It's rubbish for us, but great for business.

Definatly sounds like any highend gpu owner should not upgrade for now and simply wait :)

I say June Summer time is where we see the next beast.

NVidia are no fools, they realise they've almost squashed AMD right now. A market with no competition means people will stop buying their cards and market progress will slow down. Letting AMD stay in the game is a dangerous balance but one that if done well will keep the race going for some time now...

Sure, but the 9600 showed how easy it was for Nvidia to counter it,they have no trouble beating anything ATI brings out right now. That's the real problem. Those 4xxx cards from ATI look really fantastic though, we really do need more memory bandwidth.

Why would a market with no competition mean people would stop buying their cards? Surely then they would have a monopoly which would mean we would have no choice other than to buy their cards.

Well so far they haven't beaten the 3870x2 on price/performance

Why oh why do people only consider the "high" end market when comparing the 2 companies and deduce the NV has "squashed" AMD/ATI ?

Its been pointed out so many times that the profit area for GPU manufacturers is in low / Med range cards, An area that AMD / ATI are doing really well in, the truth is that had AMD not been making money from ATI they would have palmed it off donkeys ago, i bet the reality is, is that its probably subsidising the CPU side of things, Regardless I wouldn't be surprised if both NV and AMD dont look at intel with green eyes when the low end graphic market share figures are released.

Because they did complete smash ATI technologically, ATI doesn't have a chance right now when talking single cards. And come on, this is a technology forum, who cares about enconomics when talking about running Crysis?

Because unless your defining "crush" / "smash" lol as something other then the financial sense (which you may be) you cant not mention it + the X2's are doing well atm, and pfft to crysis :p, its one game of many that many people don#t place much weighting on anyway (i know for some its all that matters etc etc etc, ive learned that lesson the hard way yada yada).

Anyway BOT

Looks like a great year for GPU upgrades

not necessarily... look at the 3850 vs the... 8800GT 256 / 8800GS. both cards not doing what they were meant to do well...

it's only the 9600GT and the resultant HD3870 price drop that has pushed the 3850 out of mainstream contention, but for he price it remains a wickedly powerful card...

is r700 new gen ? or heavily modified r600? if it is only heavily modified r600 and nvidia bringing new gen witch could go wrong hopefully it will not nvidia will gain the crown again
