Which electric guitar would you recommend for a beginner? Budget £300

I'd get a Yamaha Pacifica but have the guy in the shop set it up for you.
For a first Guitar, Set up well they are unbeatable in my opinion.

for a beginer i would maybes say yamaha too, come to think of it. then epi les paul.

For an amp look no further than a roland cube 30x.

I've decided that I might well just get an amp while I'm getting the guitar and not using my rather expensive Denon AVR and KEF speakers... Is there group consensus over this particular amp from everyone else?

I've got a Pacifica 112 and an Epiphone les Paul Standard. I'd recommend either of those, they're nice guitars. For reference, my pacifica was in the £130 region, my epiphone cost £219. Have fun. :)

Yamaha Pacifica.

You stole my sig. I keep getting confused when I see it, thinking "Hang on, I did NOT post in this thread..." why do you use it :p?

Damn! :p I thought I'd got away with it! :D Unfortunately I cannot make a sig to save my life and I saw your amazingly good MUSE one so I plagiarised! :o :p You're not mad are you? :p

edit: edited to avoid further confusion, show respect and thank you for letting me use it :)

I was going to suggest an inversion of the colours earlier but didn't bother, great minds think alike eh :p

Whappers.

Took me far too long to make it...

Not mad as such... just curious :p Thought you might be doing it to get a rise out of me (in a totally sexual way).

Sigh... Epiphone does not suck. The EE ser no, chinese guitars are absolute quality, please dont spread rubbish rumours.

Modern Epiphones, with small exception of few random models made at Bohemia in Czech Republic and few series before closure of Samick in Korea in 2002, are one of the most inconsitant in terms of quality and built "by" guitars (as in "Epi by Gibson, Squire by Fender etc) on the market. Not only you can pick two apparently identical Les Pauls from two different factories and find one is sandwitch bodied, the other is unmatched five piece solid but they will likely also sport different parts, pickups and differ in weight. But most of all - except it's familiar shape - Epiphones mostly don't actually resemble their relative Les Paul models. They have different weight, feel, often choice of wood and structure and even neck shapes. At least Japanese "lawsuit" manufacturers in seventies and eighties would make an effort to copy Les Pauls to detail...

Then again the guitars coming out of china quandoa plant are of exceptional quality. These guitars have serial numbers beging with EE, if you get one, you will have a quality instrument and thats what i have.

And my guitar is every inch a les paul, and it sounds amazing through my cube 30x, im very happy with it. I did bung a Gibson classic 57+ in the bridge, but as I say the stock pickups are very hot........

That review really says it all really - "it would not stay in tune even after set up, some of the frets kept popping out and strings would get caught underneath, so they didn't do very good job pressing in the frets and overall the quality just wasn't very good" comment about the lowest range of Epiphone Les Pauls just gets to show you how uneven, sloppy and random QC of those Chinese Epis are these days...

well my guitar is perfect and it stay in tune no problem. Like I say if its an EE your sound.

he was talking about the most basic and cheap epiphones problems whereas the mid level, i guess £250-350 here, can really be value for money if a £1000 Gibson standard is not within your budget.

i understand that you pay for what you get, and yes T-Boy i'm lucky enough to own a Jem7v, a 30yr old Gibson Les Paul gold top deluxe , a 90's Charvel and a Fender bullet so its not like i'm not in a position to comment on the credibility of guitars in general.

OT: the Pacifica from Yamaha is an ideal guitar to start playing, but again i'd strongly recommend you visit a shop and have a look first, grab a plank have a go
