Awful Covers

I'm a big Floyd fan and thats an AWESOME cover. It takes it and makes it something completely different which works. Really doesn't belong in this thread.

Not to mention that a couple of the Floyd like it as well.

But it would be a good deal easier to compile a list of covers which weren't rubbish, because the vast majority are.

I disagree. There are a lot of excellent and notable songs where the cover is vastly more known than the original, leading some to mistakenly conclude that the successful version was the original.

Would just like to point out two or three of my favourite covers!

Holy Diver - Killswitch Engage

I LOVE the original and i LOVE this cover

Atreyu - You give love a bad name
Nice and different cover of an already catchy tune.

I also like Korns cover of Word Up come to think of it.

Now that is a bad cover. :D

What's his names destruction of Valerie with Winehouse (I know, I'm in the minority!).
Just heard on the radio some bimbogroup's murder of Nik Kershaw's Wouldn't it be good
Britney's I love rock and roll. Why??????

Marc Ronson.

True there are some very good covers out there but I think a lot of it depends on which version you heard first as to how much you like it. Johnny Cash's cover of Hurt by Nine Inch Nails would be a good cover in it's own right because he takes a song and makes it his own completely but regardless of that I prefer it to the original because I heard it first - well that and I don't like NIN too much.

Soft Cell - tainted love comes to mind.
And Gun - Word Up.

Oh, that reminds me of another awful cover. Wasn't it one of the spice bimbos who ruined that?

Several Smiths songs have been covered recently and not one was worthwhile. All covers of Fairytale Of New York which, as a classic, should remain unsulllied. I have to agree with the above, Gloria Jones' original of Tainted Love is so much better than the dross released by Soft Cell.

Oi, I was saying the soft cell version is better :p

I agreed with you up until you mentioned the word "Atreyu" alongside "favourite covers".

Urgh. Gross.

Intriguing that you would enjoy killswitch but not Atreyu, similiar styles really.
I do admit Atreyu have gone downhill with there latest though! They are however one of my most listened rock bands of late, along with In Flames and Stonesour.

Maybe it has a lot to do with when I started listening to KsE. While both bands are clearly metalcore, I started listening to KsE when Alive of Just Breathing? came out. It opened my eyes to that whole style of music. They sound very diffrent from Atreyu on that album. I'd say they still do, because they're still much heavier and more technically competant (songwriting wise).

Whenever I heard Atreyu I just think they are a hugely watered down version of Darkest Hour. I also think that the guys scream is absolutely rubbish and I can't stand the singers voice.

They sorta sucked live too when I seen em years ago on the Suicide Notes and Butterfly Kisses tour and the tour for The Curse too. I actually remember Bullet for My Valentine supporting them...I can't tell you just how painful that night was. Hahaha.

Fair enough i guess, im not the biggest killswitch fan to be honest, mainly because i dont like the guys scream lol! Just checking you werent blanket posting a sly comment because they get chucked straight into the 'emo' pile for most, uneducated folk :p.

Can't believe Tori Amos hasn't been mentioned:

Nirvana - Smells like teen spirit:

Slayer - Raining Blood ??!?!?!?:

(Not the actual video but it is her)

i quite liked this cover it adds a different light to the song.

but yes, another vote for keating's version of iris or that poor dance version of alanis morrisette's uninvited or all saints under the bridge....

I think a lot of artists go the route of changing the tempo to make it loads slower, and going unplugged. I'm assuming they do this to 'sell' the cover to the listener and make it sound more profound and/or epic than it really is.

Jo Whiley's live lounge is a breeding ground for such tracks, and although it can sometimes be interesting to hear a different take on a classic, it always comes down to the listeners opinion. Most artists want to put their own spin on classics, and that's fine, but it can sometimes come off as arrogance.
