My friend's bought a new apartment. No phone line active of course.

Do we still need to be ordering an active line from BT before we can do anything adsl wise or nowadays with lots of companies doing a complete package inc. bt line rental can you go straight to an ISP?

if I still have to contact BT first I guess i'll have to wait for a phone number to enter on an isps signup page?

Unfortunately you must have a BT line still. ADSL ISP's will want the number before you can place your order, it can take a day or so from when your line is activated to show up on their systems.

You should be able to get the number and a code from BT for simultaneous provision over the phone (we certainly got the number there and then for our new line), though last I looked there was a good chance there'd be some issue along the way.

simultaneous provision- what do i ask for when speaking to BT to setup a new line if I intend to sign up with talktalk?

just waiting for the post office to register the address as existing before BT can do anything

Take a look at this. If it's TalkTalk LLU you're going onto, you might find that complicates the process, though it shouldn't.

If he's in a good signal area for Vodafone or T-Mobile broadband that is also a possible alternative, then you won't need to wait for a BT Line and you can take the internet with you wherever you go
